I would suggest that you make an appointment with the Disability Employment Adviser or Workstep Adviser at your nearest Jobcentre. They will have a detailed chat with you and your son about the options available. He may be able to claim sickness benefits while he is receiving support from them. They usually have a range of supported employment placements available which may be less pressure for him and may ultimately lead to a job.
I work with young people exactly like him, with special needs and without. Right now, I have a young lad who was in precisely the same position about 6 months ago and even on the same medication. He is now settled and doing voluntary work and is hoping to go back to College if he doesn't get a supported placement first. I wish you the very best of luck, I know it isn't easy.
I have used this website in the past and found it really helpful.

You will find a range of advice, information and local contacts in the Perth area. Hope it helps. I also want to say a huge thankyou for taking the steps to find him support. I work with the young people who don't get that and find themselves homeless and alone.
If you want to PM me, please feel free.

I would suggest looking at DLA but please ask CAB etc to help with the forms as there are ways of wording things to get the best chance of success
i would try connexions and ask if they have a disability advisor and then the citizens advice place will have a benefit advisor you could meet with
looks like tigger 37 has lots of support and advice to offer, it's always good to talk :)
