Have just returned from Florida this morning and yet again our 5yr old sons Insulin Pump set off the Airport Security. This results in him being 'patted down, scanned with a hand-held metal detector and the pump itself being swabbed for explosives. Now I understand the need for this security but as all of these measures take place in full view of all the other passengers passing through the departure gate I think in future it may become a problem as he gets older.

Christine, that must be so upsetting for your son, surely they could have checked him over in a quieter area, if really needed. sounds like security missed out on using a bit of commen sense and compassion.

was this at a uk airport or in florida?

so sorry for him and yourselves.

daft question. did you have a letter from his consultant about the insulin pump.

It is stated in their guidelines that they should offer a private room to do this in.That is in America, can't see that UK will be any different as they are very keen to be seen a politically correct with disabilities.

But saying that I think you have to say that you wish to be privately screened,I was asked if I wanted to be screened away from the public area as I have odd medical bits which tend to set all the alarms off.Maybe because of his age it didn't occur to the security to offer this?

Hi Dave, this has only happened in US. The pump did trigger the security at Manchester Airport but when the staff were informed what it was they were satisfied with explanation.
At Sanford in the summer we were offered to go into a private room but so few people about and the officer did take us aside to a quiet area. But at Orlando yesterday where there were hundreds of people waiting at the end of each x-ray machine there are 3 chairs in a taped area(open to view) which designates area of additional searching.
Because of his age James thinks its a bit of an adventure but as he gets older unlikely to see it that way.
