My son is 8 and he can swim but wont go out of his depth even with a life jacket on. We all want to go to Discovery Cove but I am a bit concerned how deep the water is for the 'swim' with dolphins as I dont want to waste my money if he refuses to go in. I have looked on the DC web site but is doesn't say. Any help would be great. :wavey: :)

There is an option to stand in shallow water for the dolphin swim, which we saw quite a few people do. The water for the normal dolphin swim is very deep, so the shallow option would be best for your son.

No worries hev, they do a "shallow swim" which myself and DS did. He was 8 at the time and neither of us were particularly strong swimmers then.

Go for it!!! It's an experience you'll never forget!!!

for most of the encounter you are knee to chest deep. its 12 feet in the center of the lagoon which you swim out to then the dolphin pulls you back.

i don't like deep water either so the dolphin swam to me, and swam in the shallows with me.

Hi the deepest part of the dolphin pool is 15 feet deep however if you tell the guy who takes you they are helpfull and will try to do a bit more shallow end interaction. we Have seen this done before.

Friends of mine who went told me it was 22ft. :erm:

If I could show you the video I would. It was amazing.

Our group were on a shelf, not on the beach, and we all stood along the shelf to have our dolphin interaction. Then when it was time for the swim they ask who wants a shallow swim and who wants to go out into the lagoon. We opted for the shallow swim. We got exactly the same as the others. We were taken further along the shelf where we held onto the dolphin and he pulled us along. There was a trainer there at all times.

I don't know how deep the water is, but the shelf where we stood went up to my 8 year olds chest. He was fine. Your son will be fine.

As others have said there is a shallow swim option and 2 others in our group did that.

One other word of caution though is that if you do the lazy river, some of the water there is quite deep as well, and I am 5'6" and I couldn't touch the bottom, which panicked (sp?) me a bit.

Thanks JA, my son keeps asking me how deep is the water and cant make his mind up whether he will go in with the dolphins or not so I cant book the tickets but I can tell him now he go go in the shallower bit, thanks. :)

Do any of the ticket providers let you just pay a deposit and then pay the rest nearer the time or do they all want the full amount (for DC). :wavey:

Thanks for that Catherine - I dont like going out of my depth so I will watch out for the depth in the lazy river.

Hi, the lazy river caught us out too. We were expecting it to be like the others at the water parks and a fairly constant depth, but there are long stretches that are very deep. DH panic's if he cant touch the bottom and got caught in the currents and was swept into an area where he couldn't touch the bottom, as I was ahead of him it was a struggle to swim up current to help. We hadn't noticed any signs warning of the increased depth.
Saying that, he opted for the non swim package and then regretted it. We weren't aware until the day that you could do a shallow swim option.
We all agreed tho that the day was well worth the money and the park is a lovely oasis of calm in a busy schedule. :spin:
