I really do think with these things you have to look at the bigger picture. How many millions of people visit WDW each year? If you compare the number of visitors to the number of incidents i think you will find the percentage is tiny.
In cases of death after riding nearly always it has been due to an underlying illness that wasn't known.:(
I try not to get caught up in the statistics and live for the minute.:spin::wave:
do you know what no offence but im not even going to look im a bit of a "what if " worrier and it might put me off for my next trip :omg:

The incidents actually seem few and far between. One of them was "motion sickness" on Space Mountain and another was "came off ride not feeling well" on Dumbo!! :erm:
Quite funny really :)

Makes for an interesting read though. These accidents could happen anywhere. I was in an epilepsy clinic with my consultant last month, and he was telling me the best place to have a seizure was on Disney property (wasn't really listening until he said Disney). Apparently, his patient got a lot of money after having a seizure on Mission Space. Got quite annoyed (inside!) - can't disagree with my tutor!
Mission Space has had some bad press! I must admit it felt strange being on that ride. The scary thing is sometimes ppl dnt know they have a condition until its to late. Anyway, you cant go through life thinking what if, so enjoy yourself.... Especially at Disney World :spin:

Considering how many people go to Disney it's only a very small percentage and a lot seem to be people with underlying conditions or just unfortunate accidents.

It amazes me that cases of motion sickness or feeling unwell 3 hours after being on a ride even feature in that report! :erm:
I suffered from such severe motion sickness after riding Mission Space that i had to sit on the floor and couldn't move for 45 minutes for fear of passing out or throwing up! But did i report it? No, because it wasn't Disney's fault it was my own stupid fault for riding the ruddy thing even though i know i suffer with motion sickness!! The idea of reporting it wouldn't even have entered my head! :confused2

Looking at those reports, I can't see one that could really be blamed on the park. Obviously there have been deaths or injuries as result of park negligence or malfunction of rides etc, but most of the cases there are guests tripping or falling, which is mostly down to them not looking where there stepping. I n the sad cases where people have passed away it has been because of an existing condition either known or unknown.
I went on a behind the scens tour at Alton Towers at the end of last year, and the amount of work that goes into the safety of the ride, and the restrictions they put on themselves over and beyond what the manufacturers set out, is asstounding. If a park like Alton Towers take that much care with H&S, you can be sure that Disney do aswell.

I totally agree with you JJP85... although i am a worrier so i always do a big ride first to get the worry out of the way at the start of the hols... ( bet that sounds really morbid but it honestly works for me!)

On the plus side someones life was saved riding a coaster, it dislodged the brain tumour she had causing pain. She went to the hospital where they found the tumour and treated it. If she had been left the tumour would have kept growing and she might not have found out it was there until it was too late.

I spend my life (well weekends) visiting theme parks and one of the most interesting stats i read was.
You are 100 times more likely to have an accident getting to the theme park than in the theme park.
Most accidents like someone pointed out are down to the public not listening or doing something stupid like standing up on a ride or attemtping to jump of while its still in motion.
The money side of it is sad as its ruining the industry, the more and more people who make claims against park operators the less and less investment the park owners have for future projects. Then you get less visitors through the gates and the parks eventually close to make way for a supermarket.
This doesnt just happen in the UK its a worldwide problem, North america is loosing parks and attractions all the time.
Ill climb back under my bush and stop moaning now
cheers

as long as you follow the instructions then the rides are safe and if the americans didnt think so then disney and universal would come under the national fairground safety banner and would have to report incidents rather than it being volutary
Accidents happen all the time in life. It is no good going through life worrying about something that could or could not happen!! As an anaesthetist once told me, "You stood more change of dying in a car accicent whilst being driven to the hospital than you do dying under this anaesthetic"!! I never go on a theme park ride worrying that there might be an accident. I go on to enjoy myself. :-)

Vron, this is the only ride i will not go on ever again. I started to panic as soon as the doors were shut and i knew i had made a big mistake  . I felt dreadful for the day but i would not have thought about reporting it because it was my choice to ride it. May have to slow down on the rides this year though :confused2 :wavey:

I think that if you had a similar incident report for say London, you would find that came out a lot worse ;)
Probably a lot more chance of being injured trying to cross road in any busy UK town :erm:

With the complexity and speed involved in the rides then not suprising that just occasionally something goes wrong - and not always because of a condition of the individual. Someone was killed on Thunder Mountain at DLP a couple of years back - and I don't think it was a heart attack. But, as already said, much more likely to be involved in an accident on the way to the park than in it.
The only rides I'd avoid are those at temporary fairgrounds. Partly because they're too damn expensive, but mainly because they don't have the same consideration/reputation to protect as a Disney/Universal/Alton Towers......

What an intreasting thread, I thought that the number of complaints was very low compared to the number of visitors that visit Disney.
On the other hand it's very sad the ages that some of the pepole have died at.

My 'injury' report for Mission Space would read along the lines of....."suffered pain and discomfort to the ribs after laughing heartily at the female co-rider who screamed all the way through and dry-heaved continually into the sick bag".

There weren't as many as I thought there would be actually. If you're riding ToT in your 80s - good on ya!!

I think if you go and ask your local hospital how many accident victims they treat over any given period, that would put it into perspective.
Stay safe!!

Have to say looking at this how stupid some people are to ride with an existing condition they know about! There are enough signs up saying how dangerous it is! Very sympathetic to those who do not know about existing conditions, though. Not a nice way to find out.

Yup! Me too :( and the Star Wars Ride thingy and the Back to the Future - basically anything that 'fools' me into thinking I'm travelling if that makes sense :confused2
However one of my worst motion sickness 'episodes' was after riding Nemesis at Alton Towers :( I sat on the floor head between my legs gripping the concrete :nonono:

Look at some of the accidents. 5 listed for IOA:
1) Spiderman - Fainting
2) Dueling Dragons - Nausea, heartburn, chest pain, numb left arm
3) Hulk - Loss of Consciousness
4) Jurassic Park climbing nets - Fractured arm
5) Duelling Dragons - Upper back pain
So on the face of it, OMG 5 accidents. But when you break it down not much happened that wouldn't happen anywhere else with that many people.

At first I thought, oh my god, but then that amount of accidents is normal for anywhere, you could pick any shop in the world, like B&Q, and more people have probably died in their from heart attacks! Its life!
And I can think of a lot worse places to go than in Disney!

I'm not a worrier, i'm just not going to look, because its not what i want to be thinking about whilst i'm there.
I would think twice before going on a travelling fareground ride especially abroad. When i was on holiday last year a little boy who was staying at the same site as me got flung out of a ride when his restraint broke. He ended up in hospital with horrible injuries but luckily he survived

When i went in 1989 i almost drowned in the wet n wild wave pool.
Having not been in a wave pool like it before i got out of my depth and after trying to swim back for some time i gave up and accepted that i would probably drown.
The next thing i knew was that i was on the side of the pool having been dragged out by the lifeguards
I apparently had come round ok so they did not think i was under for long.
I am very glad those lifeguards were there as i might not be here today.
On a lighter note i also remember considering whether it was worth living after being dragged on Small World for the umpteenth time
when we went in 04 my ds went on all the rides and nothing happened but when we went to leave the park my ds and his dad tripped on some steps and bumped his head it turned out later he had a heir line fracture to his skull :( , the park involved were fantastic :) and did every thing they could to help us. but it does prove you can do just as much damage just walking around.
if you jump out of the vehicle on safari and break ankle whos to blame? yourself and came off ride and felt ill isnt really an incident.
Must admit i did feel abit weird on mission space last year

Hi
I have read another site that shows accidents in all the theme parks.
(i have took the link out as im unsure whether i can post it sorry)
Some verified and some not but a lot of them are small things like in the link from the OP. A lot of these incidents are from people not knowing they had heart conditios and also from riding when they probably shouldnt and they know it.
Its when i read about a ride malfunction it freaks me more.
Dont let things like this spoil your holidays, after all i HATE flying but if i want to get WDW i have no option i have to put my life on the line (in my eyes) with a pilot i dont know and the guys who serviced the plane, hoping they werent working a double shift and missed something when they did so !!
Extreme i know, but it doesnt stop me boarding.

I'm disappointed that they didn't list my "accident" at IOA last July! I didn't see "woman chucking up after riding the Hulk" listed anywhere!

Most of these injuries are pre-exsisting conditions (sometimes the person doesn't know) or injuries due to a blatent disregard to the rules and regulations!
