I would recommend a visit but I think you'll find it far to far for a day trip!!
Spectacular views.

I am not a religious person but I always call Yosemite "Gods Garden".
I think it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. I would definitely recommend that you go but.............please try to go for longer than you have said. Even if it were possible, there would be so much you would miss :thumbs-up

Hi did a Virgin Holiday trip to SF in 2004 and they did a coach trip to Yosemite although it was a long day...it was a stunning place to visit.

It's probably a 4 hour drive from San Fran but then it'll take you a few hours to drive around the park.
It's possible I suppose, but it'll be a very long day, especially as some of the roads are quite difficult to drive (but an interesting trip!!)
When we went last year there had been a rock slide on one of the main roads out of Yosemite so we had to drive on a 1 track road (1 way) controlled by traffic lights - this slowed us down quite a lot too

It is absolutely 100% worth it in my humble opinion....
But maybe take 2 days if you can! FANTASTIC!!

A fantastic place to go, the views are amazing from each point if you drive right to the top. The toilets in a couple of places leave alot to be desired!!!. A long way to go for a day.

I have been looking into this a lot for 2009 and was thinking about doing one of the organised two day trips I have seen on Viator. We want to fit this in with SF and San Diego. I have wanted to go to Yosemite for years and years.

We went for a day trip to Yosemite on our trip to california/San Fran in June.I'm sure this is the way to go rather than drive yourself.
It was an 8/9 hour trip but absoluely worth it.And in the hours you are at Yosemite you get taken to the 'best/main' places that you'd want to see when you only have a day.
The other bonus was we were on a small coach so got to know other people and had an informative guide with us all day :spin:
Definitely take a day out of your San Fran visit to go to Yosemite :thumbs-up

We drove through Yosemite as a way over the Sierras - we'd decided not stay as all the accommodation in the park was booked up. However, just those few hours were magical; the place is beautiful.
We will go back for a longer stay sometime.
If you are driving, be aware some of the roads are scary: hairpin turns and sheer drops.

I agree with what's already been said. If you only have a day to spare then I would do an organised trip rather than driving. In actual mileage terms it isn't that far. However most of the roads are very windy and it takes a long time to drive it. You also need to be very alert as there is little or no warning of the hairpin bends!
If you can do it with an overnight stop at one of the hotels in the park (I'd recommend the Yosemite Lodge - basic but clean) then that would be better imho!

We have done the 4 hour and the 8 hour park tour, both were Brill, but we went to stay in SF and decided to do the day tour from there, we only spent 2 hours in the park and that included lunch time, it was a waste of time and money so if your going make sure your in the park as early as possible and do one of the guided tours.
