I want to buy DS a DVD or video/music player to use on the plane.
I haven't a clue what I should be looking at, can anyone help with recommendations?

Preferably a region free DVD player, or at least one that can be "hacked" to make it region free in case you buy any DVDs in the US. Good battery life or a cheap spare battery although to be honest, the battery life on most of them isn't that great, 2 hours seems to be the norm.
I use a Sony PSP, download videos onto memory stick and with an extended battery, get about 7 hours battery life.

Our Ben has a niffty little Samsung mp4 player that holds about three movies or 2gb of music, but I couldn't watch a movie on it as the screen is to small.
Converting the movies from dvd is a pain as well TBH, so I'd rather use our portable DVD. On a plane though 2hours of battery aint much

I use my Archos to watch movies or indeed TV programmes recorded to it before I go.(7 inch screen)
Doesn't play DVD's of course but can get numerous movies, TV programmes/music the internal hard drive.
Might not be exactly what your after but thought I would make the suggestion.

Just bumping for any more suggestions

Would this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-NWZA818-Video-Walkman-Battery/dp/B000VD2130/ref=pd_ts_c_th_5?pf_rd_p=140715791&pf_rd_s=right-4&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=560884&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=02TDXNMNT94N33P21B2V) be a good choice? Anyone got one of these?

Just thought I didn't mention it's for DS so needs to be quite small and robust.

Why dont you get an I-Pod nano and you can put films/games and also music on through your computer before you go.

Dh has a 80 gb and his holds loads.

Lynn, Josh has a portable DVD player which he uses but it's no good for a long plane journey. He's got a Creative MP3 that he listens to his music from which takes normal AAA batteries.

I thought about getting him an ipod but his elder brother said he wouldn't manage the controls very well. Not sure if this is an issue for you.
