Well as the title says really....have just realised our 11th wedding anniversary falls on a Saturday this year thought it would be extra special and as we both work for the ambulance service full time with 2 kids thought we deserve sometime to ourselves.
I really want to go to New York and have been looking but want to know if anyone can suggest hotels as would rather look at places that come recommended. What price is reasonable for 21st Aug - 24th.
Trouble is hubby is better at finding bargains than me but i have just caught him looking at Florida for Dec as a family rather than what i asked him to!!!!
Thank you in advance
Marcie

Wow no one been....thought ppl were well travelled obv not!!
I haven't seen your post all day, it must have slipped out of view!
A lot of dibbers have been to New York and I'm sure you will get plenty of suggestions as to hotels.
We stayed for a week and so we stayed on the Upper West Side about 15 mins out of Times Square. If you are visiting one for a weekend only you may want to stay a bit closer to the action.
I don't know what the prices are like in August but hotels in New York are expensive anyway, we paid about £1000 for a week in April 06.

Didn't see your post earlier - must have slipped into a black hole overnight as I know loads of us Dibbers have been to New York! :)
I've been twice, first time stayed at the Grand Hyatt which is right next door to Grand Central Station. Really enjoyed the hotel but it wasn't cheap! When I went a couple of years back we stayed at the Eastgate Hotel in Murray Hill which was fab! It was far more basic than the Hyatt but we had a studio so having a kitchen area was great plus the room was really big and the view brilliant.
I'm sure you'll get loads of hotel recommendations from others on here. Have fun planning, I love New York and can't wait to go back again. :)

Have a look on the Affinia hotel chain website (google seach 'affinia')
They have half a dozen hotels in NY and all seem to be listed in the top 20 of best reviewed hotels on the Trip Advisor website.
Corry.
I didn't see your post either - definitely something funny going on! ;)
We're going to New York for the first time end of March. We're staying at the Affinia Dumont, you can see all hotels and rates at www.affinia.com I got a AAA Rate, which came in at under $300 a night which was for a 1 bedroom suite, which is two rooms, one with the bed(s) in and one with sofa, desk, tv, and also there's a kitchen as well.
Hope that helps a bit. Any questions please ask away.

hi we've been three times, first time stayed at a howard johnson near to Macys, this was beginning of december 2000
then stayed at park central hotel near central park (november)04
3rd time we stayed in an apartment near to the united nations buildings, but i cannot remember what they were called. this was in august 05.
each time was for 3 nights, going as a family, we found the apartment great, though it was a bit of a walk up to broadway etc.
anywhere close to times sq would be a great location

You deffo want an apartment style hotel if you are travelling with kids, there are a few in NYC, the most popular seems to be Radio City Apartments, and also, as others have said, the Affina hotel group have a few too.
Aug in NYC is going to be HOT and humid. It's a big city with a lot of pollution! People i know who live in NYC have said it's not the best time to visit, but if that's the only time you've got then don't let that put you off.
Bare in mind, NYC is expensive at the best of time, during peak season, it'll probably be even pricey. Have you priced up flights yet?
I'd be inclined to advise you to go later on in the year if possible... Sept & Oct is meant to be a fabulous time to visit.

Apartment type accomodation, a good one is Murrayhill suites east, they are reasonable and very big rooms and a kitchen if you have children.
You could also try Priceline.
Also dont forget to book your New York Greeter!! they are brill!!

Check out this thread (http://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=189098)- similar question.
We did New york last August and loved it so much we went back Xmas shopping in November. For me it is a city everyone must visit, its a wonderful, eye opening place.
If you are tied to a weekend then i would advise a hotel in the financial district. they work out cheaper, and one hotel i would defiantly recommend is here (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/nycws-new-york-marriott-downtown/) http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t271/gaz70_album/holiday%202007/IMG_0235.jpg We stayed here last August, i emailed them a week before we left to ask for a room with a view as it was DWs 40th birthday trip, not only did they give us a room with a fantastic view http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t271/gaz70_album/holiday%202007/IMG_0229-1.jpg

But on our first night they delivered a tray of cheese, biscuits and fruit plus champagne and strawberries i was bowled over with their generosity. Also included was a pass for the duration of our stay to the club lounge, WOW. We loved it, and to top it all off the staff were fantastic, they couldnt do enough to help.
Also included on the 5th floor is a pool which was ideal to relax and chill out in after a day of pounding the pavements.
If you look in the trip reports section there are a few trip reports that include new york trips (mine included).
just done a quick search this hotel comes out at $250 a night.

Hi
We went May 2005, me and my sister took my mum for her 50th birthday.
We stayed at the Milford Plaza (270 west, 45th Street), which is at the end of the Times Square Block, its a great location and easy to get around from there. The hotel is a 3* we found it to be a clean base and the staff really helpfull.
You can pre book your return airport taxi from their customer service
desk, which we found by using their transport was much cheaper
than paying for your own private taxi.
There is a ticket office to get your "red bus" hopper tickets from just
around the corner and the bus stop to start your journey.
We booked the hotel and flights separate on the net all was done via e-tickets.
We found cheap continental flights via expedia, and the hotel room via a site call findnewyorkrooms, the total price per person was £350, we went on a Thursday morning from Manchester and returned Sunday tea time (it was cheaper to travel on the thursday).
Its worth shopping around to find the best prices, Happy Hunting xx
i've just booked a holiday for my parents and although i priced it all independently in the end it worked out cheaper booking through VH so it might be worth looking at holiday companies too. VH have still got a sale on til 15th Feb, they were also doing 2 for 1 over valentines week in case you want to go soon

I have been twice and stayed at radio city appartments which was very reasonable and great time square location it's not the most luxuorius place to stay but clean and commfy. I would think that it's propably quite cheap to get the flights this time of the year as oct-dec seem to be peak for nyc

I can second that, it was really freezing and me the daft sod is doing it again next week. Must be mad, we have been to TOG and got all togged up ;) , boots, hats, scarfs, gloves coats for the kidlets.
As for accomodation, there seems to be a lot of people who recommend the Affina group of hotels, Benjamin, ect. These hotels do look great and have 1 and 2 bedroom suites and they are well priced. WE are paying more for our room at the Westin 400 SQ ft, than a 2 bedroom suite :omg: :omg: . However we have gone for what we are familiar with and what we feel is the best overall location.
