Anyone rate Madrid?

How's Madrid compare to Paris, Rome, Florence, Barcelona? Of these, we like Barcelona the most... historic buildings, old town, relatively compact for wandering around...would we like Madrid?

DH took me there for a surprise long weekend for my...ahem..40th!

We had been to Barcelona a couple of times and really liked that, and I enjoyed Madrid too.

The main sights and museums are in a fairly compact area, quite easy to walk to, or the metro system is very easy and cheap too.

There is an old quarter, which is very pretty and rather like Barcelona, which is where we ate mostly. As any city, it isn't dirt cheap, but by seeking out set menus in traditional bistros and tapas, we didn't find it too expensive. But of course there are more upmarket bars and restaurants too, if that's what you want.

We went a few years ago before we'd been to Rome & Barcelona and we really liked it. The metro system is really good and the main plaza is lovely as is the Palace & park. There are a lot of nice restaurants off the beaten track in fact we went to one where no-one spoke English so we just pointed to the menu and hoped for the best, turned out to be one of the best meals we had!
