I really want to surprise DD with horse riding in the morning & petting zoo at fort wilderness, then whispering canyon for lunch and then off to Chip'n'dales campfire in the evening.

So I have a couple of Qs

Will this take a lot of travelling, if so how do we get back and for (no car)?

What time is Chip'n'dales campfire and is it worth it?

What else can we do around Wilderness Lodge/Fort Wilderness?

( Though Fort Wilderness resort is huge and you probably need a bus to get from one end to the other )

Disney's Wilderness Lodge -to- Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground

* Add 5-10 minutes at each segment wait time for transportation.

Driving Time (car or taxi) is : 8 mins.
Disney's Wilderness Lodge Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground : 4 mins. (bus)

Disney's Wilderness Lodge Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground : 14 mins. (boat)

Wilderness Lodge has a boat launch where you can get a boat just across the lake to Fort Wilderness about 10 mins thats all. You will need to check at Reception what time it leaves.

You can take the ferry from Wilderness Lodge (where Whispering Canyon is) to Fort Wilderness, it's less than a 10 minute trip, however the area where the campfire singsalong takes place is quite far away from where the boat drops you. We'd intended to do exactly as you plan to but decided it was just too far to walk. There is bus transportation around Fort Wilderness as it is so huge, but I've no idea how long that would take. There are also golf cart type vehicles for hire, but I'm not sure if you need to be a campground guest to hire those.

You could take the horse and cart trip around Fort Wilderness, it looked like fun.

Ok, thanks, is the horseriding/petting zoo far from where you are dropped by bus/boat?

Not far at all to the petting farm - may be a five minute stroll. Sort of round the corner! However, the horse riding is at the other end of FW, although only about 10 mins by internal bus, which runs regularly.

The last time we went to the petting farm, we were quite disappointed. They seemed only to have goats, and ponies for younger children to have a ride on. In days go by (many, many moons ago), there was quite a variety of small animals.

Sorry, I've never been to the campfire singalong.

Thats great thanks, I really want to do this but don't want to stress DH and DD by dragging them back & fore if its going to be arduous.

You can walk from Fort Wilderness to Wilderness Lodge, it takes about 20 minutes at a very leisurely stroll. The walk will improve your appetite - it did ours last year when we walked from WL to FW and ate at Trails End, which is the best value buffet meal in WDW. There is an internal bus that goes between the two, the bus stop at FW is near the Hoop-de-do building which is near the petting area.

The horse riding centre is at the reception end of FW where you will arrive (assuming that you are not staying at a MK resort) When you are done with that then hop on one of the internal busses which run about every 10 minutes (we never waited longer than that in a 14 night stay) and get out at the settlement. The petting zoo is here although as others have said there are not as many animals here as they used to be. It is no more than a 5 min walk from the petting zoo to the settlement area here you will also find a sandy beach, and boat hire etc. Wilderness lodge can either then be accessed by boat (as can the contemporary) or along a pretty path which would take about 20 mins. When you return for the camp fire, again get on an internal bus and jump off at the meadows trading post.
Hope that helps

Although there are many reports of FW being huge, it is in fact "only" 1 mile from one end to the other, and 1/2 mile across. The internal bus system is very efficient. Golf carts can be hired (and booked in advance) from the bike barn, but they are expensive and you cannot drive them to wilderness lodge.

I like the sound of a golf cart, I think DD and DH would too.

We stayed at Wilderness Lodge last week and walked over to Fort Wilderness! It took about 20 minutes on a very pretty walk through the woods to get to the petting zoo!
Fort Wilderness is a lovely resort and, as others have said, if you don't fancy the walk you can use the internal buses to get around the Resort and catch a boat or bus back to Wilderness Lodge!

If you were to walk normal pace from the WL to Trails End (main area), it's about a mile (20 minutes).

If you were to walk from Trails End to the campfire, you'd be adding about another 7 minutes. For me to walk from the Wilderness Lodge (normal pace, 3mph) to the parking lot at FW is about 40 minutes, approx. 2 miles. I have photos of the walks here: http://www.mousesteps.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=22&Itemid=47 (swamp walk is now gone).

But, the boat doesn't have to take too long - it mostly depends on how long it takes to arrive, and how many people are waiting for it. You can't use a golf cart between the 2 resorts, but you could rent bikes.

The path between the WL and FW is not lit at night, it is VERY dark. At dusk you may see quite a few deer.
