i'm not so sure what they'll do other than make it down as an unauthorised absense... ds is only allowed 10 days a year for holidays, and we ended up with 2 unauthorised days

It really does depend on the school. We take our son out of school for our holidays for 2 weeks each school year. We have to write a letter to the school advising them of the dates. Yes they frown upon it but otherwise we have had no problems.

Hi,
I'm in the same position as you - we need to take our two out for 12 days. DS is 8 and in Year 3 same as yours and DD is 7 and in Year 2. Our old headmaster was OK about signing off holidays but the new headmistress has said that we can only take them out in EXCEPTIONAL circumstances. Fortunately we had booked this holiday before she sent the letter out stating this so I'm hoping I'm not going to have too much trouble. Like you, my two don't have hardly any time off but I'm still getting myself worked up about asking for the time off!

My DD is 5 and in reception class, Her holiday in May that i requested has been unauthorised by her school, its only 8 days! as some of our holiday is in half term.
I'm still taking her as this holiday has been booked before she even started school.
Welcome by the way! :spin:

Hi and Welcome. I'm so glad my children are no longer of school age. It all depends on which LEA you come under I suppose. Hopefully you will not be penalised. Good luck!

Hi welcome to the Dibb
a child is allowed upto 20 sessions (10 FULL DAYS) of authorised absence per academic year, but as others have said this all depends on the head teacher of the school it is their choice wether or not to authorise it. good luck with it though

I've taken my son out every year for 10-14 days. (usuallu Florida and then a center parcs trip in the Autumn). He's currently a year 3 and |I also now have one in Reception . Yes you're right the general rule is for 10 days per academic year. I'm a school governor and because each school has an attendance target set by their LEA it can be frowned upon. However, if your child has good attendance the rest of the year they really aren't concerned, trust me many more children have a very poor attendance record and it's nothing to do with being taken out for a family holiday. These are the ones the EWO (Education Welfare Officer) is interested in.

 Hi. Welcome to the Dibb.
If you think his school are going to make a fuss, or charge you, don't tell them. Have him come down with a case of scarlet fever or something! I know its not ideal lying but until the governement stop travel companies from ripping people off during school holidays they must expect people to take their kids out of school. I always took my son out of school for holidays - as a single parent I had no choice. He is now at university so it hasn't done him any harm.
