Hi

Im 33 and just had a operation that has resulted in an ilesotomy, this wasn't expected and still coming to terms with it.

We are off to WDW in August and would like to hear anyones experiences of having an ileostomy in WDW. Do you still go swimming/to water parks etc?? I know it may sound a silly question but its all really new to me at the minute. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Sorry to hear the op didn't go quite as planned. Are you in contact with a specialist nurse? That would be the best person to advise you and answer any questions.

Yes I do have a nurse but I would like real people who have the experience of ileostomies in the parks as they are the best to advise.

My sister has had an ileostomy for over 10 years now. She hasn't been to WDW but I know she goes swimming regularly and has been to DLP in the past. She does some voluntary work to support people who have recently had the op and are finding it difficult to come to terms with the situation, or who have practical questions like this that people who haven't had the op find dificult to answer. If you would like me to ask her to contact you I can do so - send me a pm!

Hi there. My son had an Ileostomy fitted 13 years ago at the age of 5 after having his large bowel removed.
He had his bag for 9 months.
We did go to DLP and had a week in Turkey, while he had his. The thing I do remember when swiming was the chlorine seemed to eat at the glue around the bag then, so we had to keep an eye and change it frequently. So you need to take extra supplies in case this happens.
You would be best to use the disabled or companion restrooms whilst out. We found this easier with having a wash basin in the same room.
I am sorry that this happend and like us you had no time to prepare for it. I found it did get easier, but thats not much consolation now.
As others have said there should be a stoma nurse who can give you some advice, as there are probably more up to date things than what we used.
PM me if I can help at all.

I had an ileostomy in 2001, which was complicated by a large fistula they discovered during the op. Anyway, I went alone to Florida a few months later for 2 reasons. Firstly I decided I needed to get away after all I had been through and secondly I chose to go on my own as I needed to prove to myself that I could cope with this 'thing' on my own without a stoma care nurse at the end of the phone if i wasn't sure about something.
Anyway, cut a long story short, I coped OK, had a few problems but dealt with them, mostly due to humidity affeccting the adhesive when I satyed in clearwater, the everglades and key west.
Orlando was OK exept for having a slush puppy type drink in MK, thank god I chose the blue one not the red one as I found out later that evening the colouring stays there 'all the way through'!
Tips I'd give are these:
1) If u have air con in the room use it even if only when you need to change the bag
2) drink plenty of fluids before going and when you're there, you really do get dehydrated quicker there
3) Take plenty of bags with you and don't worry if you find that you need to change them daily or more often
4) If possible take some different ones with you aas I found that one type was ok for daily use but I needed another type for swimming in the sea
5) The flight will be more comfortable if you don't eat too early before leaving and empty the bag before boarding the plane (avoid fizzy drinks before flying due to reduced air pressure on board, ok to drink once you're on your way)
My trip gave me the confidence I needed to get on with life, I went back to Uni and retrained as a radiographer afterwards, I have been to Florida several times after, may be going back again in November for pre xmas shopping.
Any questions feel free to contact me
