I often wonder why? when I have been on cruises most of the people I talk to say they dont get off the ship at Jamaica they stay on board!!

It is because of the unrest on the Island...
We went to Ocho Rios as part of a cruise last Nov and it was really good but I personally wouldn't go back. DH would go and see other parts of Jamaica he said.
Montego Bay is supposed to be a lot worse than Ocho Rios and I know a lot of people DO stay on the ship!
DH told me there was no point in going if we were going to stay on the ship!!
We had a great day there ~ climbed Dunns River Falls, went River Tubing, saw Fern Gulley and ate Jamaican Jerk Chicken ~ we were taken around by a tour guide ~ Mark Morris (http://www.markstours.com/home.html)~ highly recommend him...
We went to Jamaica on our Honeymoon and loved it. We did Dunns River Falls which is a 600ft waterfall which you walk UP with a guide. I am not a great water baby but loved it.
You can go into the mountains and see the Coffee Plantations.
The sea is wonderful just like a bath and the watersports are fab too.
Make sure you go All Inclusive as it would not be easy to find restaurants outside the main hotels.
We travelled in mid September and the weather was lovely but it usually rained about 2pm each day for a little while. Weather is very hot. We would usually be on the beach about 8.30am and it was lovely then.
There is a lot of people who would not go to Jamaica because of the unrest but personally and as working for a TA there is no major problem
Went for the first time September 2004, got married there and had a fabulous holiday.
We are going back in April for the last 8 days of our 5 week trip. Its only a 2 hour flight from Orlando.
As already said weather fabulous with rain most afternoons for a couple of hours. With most Caribean Island the weather is better in our winter (hardly any rain).
My in-laws have been to Jamaica many times and love it there. They have been to Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negra and always stay all inclusive in a four star plus or five star hotel. They go in either January or February. :-)
We've been twice and loved it - thinking of going again next year.
We've always booked a high quality all-inclusive in a large resort as it's not the sort of place you want to wander about on your own - but this also applies to most of the more popular Caribbean islands.
Most of the un-rest is in the bigger, non-touristy towns like Kingston so I would deffo steer clear of there.

We went last year in February. The weather was fabulous - we had the odd rainshower but short lived and soon hot again.
We stayed at Beaches Negril and have to confess we went for a week for the sun and to relax so we didn't leave the resort - apart from a few walks along the beach. We had a great time. There is a lot of security at the resort even on the beach but we felt perfectly safe.
There is unrest in Jamaica - I wouldn't go to Kingston at all but although Jamaica has a bad reputation I'm not sure it's totally deserved in terms of tourist safety if you stay in the tourist areas. Negril Bay really is a quiet sleepy place and I've never heard of any trouble there. It is just all inclusive resorts and a few smaller hotel/ B&Bs.
We've travelled quite extensively in the Carribean over the last few years and my favourite islands were Antigua, St Lucia and Grenada although I've not disliked any (except we weren't too impressed with St Martin). If you wanted to get out and about more and see the islands I probably wouldn't recommend Jamaica. We only went there because it was a last minute decision and flights to all the others were full - but we didn't regret it. We had a great time.
We thought the island was lovely but you couldn't go out without an escort. Too many people in our hotel got robbed when they went out and we encountered a lot of bad language and attitude (not all from younger people, It even included old ladies if we didn't give them money as they demanded)- even though DD was only 7at the time. Maybe it's better now, I hope so
