You need 1000 posts to get the 5th ear, I am trying for my golden ear but without success at the moment as you need 2000 post for that

It does seem to take ages to get to the fifth ear! Keep dibbing and it'll pop up before you know it. :spin:

You used to be able to see your total posts in your userCP but this was removed a while ago.
Hi all
I guess i will have to just keep going. :spin: :pgig:
It's 500 posts to get 4 ears, but 1000 to get to 5. So it's a big jump and takes ages!

It would be helpful to know how many posts you have done on here if there was a post counter but there doesnt seem to be? Can anyone else help with this query? :confused2

As said above it was removed. People were just posting for posting sake just to get their post count up.

We removed the post counter because some people mistakenly think that the higher number of posts they have the better standing they have in society, as though it makes them more important somehow! Very sad I know, but some people actually think like that :)
When people can see the post counts it can encourage some to enter what we call "post count racing", this is where they post just any old rubbish just to see their count go up. This is a very stupid practice as all it does is show that that person has nothing valuable to say and at the same time clogs up the forums with useless posts.
So to prevent this we have removed the post counters.
We have the ears just to add a bit of fun into the site, these could obviously still encourage some to enter a post count race to get their next ear, but because you can't actually see the number of posts you have or need to get the next ear, it doesn't usually have the same effect.
The idea of any forum is to ask questions, share information you may have with others, get to know different people, make friends and have some fun. None of these actually require you to know how many posts you have made... hence we removed them.
I'd much rather read a forum thread that has quality posts that you can read rather than being full of posts that like "yeah I agree"
We used to get this in the trip reports, some members would answer every single trip report with "good report" or something similar copied and pasted on 30 or more posts within the space of a few seconds. This just showed that they hadn't even had the courtesy to actually read the report! I think we have cured that now as we delete posts and reduce the actual post count to zero when we spot someone actively posting just to increase their count.
Hope that explains :)

I've been wondering about the whole ear situation myself, 1,000 ears does sound a lot but then again DH says I spend more time on here than doing anything else so I guess it'll app'ear' before I know it. Thanks for the great explanation Stu.
