Not an expert... but I have the McAfee and find it really good :thumbs-up
And I'm pretty sure you have to remove all other anti-virus software before using another
Definitely remove all the Norton stuff before you install another anti-virus package.

I have always used AVG. It's free to use for your personal computers/laptops and can be downloaded from the following link.
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html
It's a great bit of software that is very widely used.
You will be better of uninstalling any other anti virus software first.
Hope this helps you out.

A word of caution against some of the AV software. Some of them can be a complete pig to remove, certainly in the past McAfee was next to impossible to get rid of. I would suggest looking at one of the free pieces of software such as AVG. I 've used it for years without any problems

I always used to uninstall Norton, then re-install it and I got the full 90 days again, and it worked everytime, I've had it for years, and no problems.

Anothe vote for free AVG. Our DD, who works in IT, says it is better than the others which are not free.

My computer "man" says that McAfee isn't very good, and is one of the most expensive, he recommended one called avast! which I have had for about 6 months now and it's been brilliant. He got it free for me, but I'm not sure where from.
AVG free edition here - recommended by my PC guy, who hates Norton and came along with a removal 'tool' on his USB stick to make sure it was all deleted as apparently it can be a swine to remove totally!

Another "thumbs-up" for AVG!! :thumbs-up I've used it for years without any problems at all and have recommended it to many friends. I've never used Norton personally, but have heard that it slows computers down horrendously! :erm: I do know that my dad's computer was performing particularly badly and it was only when he uninstalled Norton, upon the recommendation of someone, that his computer started working properly again. He's not had a problem since!!! What is it with Norton???????

Another vote for AVG, I actually uninstalled Norton when I bought my laptop and installed AVG instead.
I use Kaspersky Internet Suite on the families PC's (both firewall & AV) and F-Secure on mine. I prefer the former as it's less intrusive and pretty robust. It's currently on #1 security software recommended by PC Pro magazine (http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/145065/kaspersky-internet-security-7.html) - I'd buy and use it again.
Norton is just to clunky and hogs system resources.

Stay away from anything Norton or Mcafee. Mcafee were good 10/15 years ago, not now. AVG is free the only problem is that it's a bit of a resource hog but it's still pretty good. Personally I'd recommend Kaspersky or F-Secure, oh and download Spybot S&D if you don't have it already, it's also free, picks up spyware, malware etc.

I'm in the better the devil you know camp.
For info I've just bought the McAfee Internet Security Suite 2008 (3 User Edition) for £22 from amazon.
I'd also recommend installing Spybot and Adaware programmes, no one programme is a catch all.

I'm not a Norton fan but reasonable folk I know say the 2008 initialises much faster and hogs a lot less resources than before.
Nothing against AVG either I have to say.

Last time I removed Norton a couple of years ago, it was via control panel ->add/remove programmes.
However at that time there was a lucky order as to which Norton application you removed first.
It may have changed in the meantime but Google is your friend.
Certainly Norton has a reputation for being hard to remove but it was no probs for me then.
Norton (especially the suites) are notoriously difficult to remove. Occasionally, Symantec have to release programs you can download to uninstall their software. As for it being a system resource hog, I can't think of anything worse and I don't use it / recommend it anymore.

I'm no big fan either but folk I know (pretty PC literate) say the new 2008 version is a big improvement on resources.
