The ferry to Ellis Island via Statue of Liberty leaves from Battery Park. Anyone know if you can get taxis directly from where you disembark at BP or how far to nearest available taxis?

My mum (70's) wants to do this on her own (rather than go to baseball with us!) but just wants piece of mind getting back to hotel on her own.

She will I think have to walk through the park to a main road and then find a taxi. You come off the ferry right into the park, so it would be a 5-10 minute walk to a road.

A probable dearer option is to disembark on the New Jersey side and get a taxi back into NY from there thro' the Holland Tunnel. On that side you disembark immediately onto a paved area where the trains used to take the immigrants to their destinations. We caught the Statue/Ellis ferry on that side, from the old railway station, then disembarked in Battery Park after our tour. You can go either way.

If you look on Google Earth you'll see the old train station buildings just north of Ellis Island, by Audrey Zapp Drive. Ferries go from here to other parts of NY too. Depending on where you're staying, it may be just as quick!

Battery Park isnt very big. When you leave the ferry I believe if you go left toward the perimeter is closer and a block or so to Broadway.

from the terminal to the road side is onl;y about 500 meters. the one thing i would say as you are asking for an elderly lady, dont allow her to walk around battery park at night. i am not saying that anything would happen, it is used by the not so fortunate at night so can be a little daunghting for some. If a cab is not available then tell her to walk around to the Staten Island Ferry, they are there all the time. that walk again is about 500 m. if she opts for that one, tell her to come of the ferry, turn right (keep the water on her right) and the next building it the Staten island terminal.

Ellis Island is a fantastic day out, tell her to tag onto a free tour, its the best way to see the history of the island, you wont miss anything out, all the areas are explained with fantastic accuracy and masses of information.
