I asked on here about a digital camera for my nephew after spending days looking through reviews on the internet and ended up with a cracking camera at a great price recommended by a Dibber. Thought I would ask here first this time. :D

My nephew is looking for a laptop .. up to £400 .. good memory.

He is in the forces and abroad at the mo and will be using it mainly to e-mail .. chat .. play games .. pictures and music. Needs to be quite robust too.

thanks in advance.

I am getting so confused when I look at the specifications as it is all gobbledegook to me.

What are the important bits I should be looking at ?

Have spent all afternoon researching laptops and think I am now an expert :pgig:

Have decided on:

FUJITSU SIEMENS AMILO PI-2515

these are the specifications ...

Does this seem OK ?

My only concern is that most laptops aren't what I'd call "robust", especially not the ones you see in the shops. If you do want something that will stand more than the odd knock, I'd look for a business laptop from Levono (formerly IBM) or Dell. My company has over 1,000 laptop users and almsot all are IBM / Levono. They're not the fastest, prettiest or well specified machines but they can stand the stress of 'hot-desking' during site-to-site visits.

My wife has an £800 HP laptop with a fantastic specification but I wouldn't want to take it on the road with me; it's too 'flimsy' for my liking.

Hi...

Things to look for... ram - hard disk size - processor - video graphics card.

That lap top will write to a cd/dvd so any excess music/pics can be saved off to create space. 160 gigs is a lot but can be taken up pretty quickly by pics and music and ESPECIALLY games.

I would ask what games he wants to play... I am not an expert but that looks like an integrated graphics chip... usually you will have a graphics 'card' that sticks into the pc/lap top - to play new games the video card is the most important. It looks like the graphics steals memory from the ram to operate, and am doubtful any up to the minute games would run very well - someone else have an input?

My son paid about £200 for his graphics card alone on his PC - and that isn't top of the range heh :).

If you want to play some of the graphics intensive modern games, an integrated graphics chip won't be up to the job. It will need a good Nvidia or ATI card with, preferably, at least 512mb graphics memory.

But if you want a hi-spec graphics card in a laptop, the price is gonna rocket. Swings & roundabouts.

not sure if it will be what he is looking for but I recently was given a dell vostro with nvidia installed, and it is a pretty robust piece of kit compared to my old toshiba satellite.

Lead in prices are very keen too. Just a thought.

Can't beat Dell IMHO. My son is in the MEt Police and carts his back and forth to London on the train. He uses it for games as well as all other stuff.
I have one too but not as high spec, my grandkids get on it and its always great.
