View Full Version : Hertz???
Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place to post this (If not I'm sorry!)
Booked our flights via opodo and was offered car rental with Hertz. We collect from San Fran and return to LA they have charged us for 9days and the cost is Approx £174.09?? I have paid this amount but I want to know as it is an approx price will I get stung for loads of charges when we Pick up/return the car??
Cheers

I would think that would be the cost of the car hire including insurances but my only concern would be the possibility of a one way drop off fee.
I have used car hire before and been charged a one way drop off fee, other times there has been no charge. Your best bet is to contact Opodo immediately and get them to contact Hertz to confirm whether there is a charge or not.
The only extra cost to pay should be fuel related - unless you opt to take out extra insurance, or keep the car too long.
Looking at the Opodo website it says:
Hertz: All prices are fully inclusive of unlimited mileage, third party insurance, loss damage waiver (no excess applies to cars from Hertz USA), theft waiver, airport surcharge and all local taxes.
Just a suggestion, but it might be too late now, but if you are planning to stay in SF a couple of days before heading to LA you would be better off booking to pick-up the car in the city when you want to leave, rather than paying expensive parking for a car you will not be using. The sum you would save would cover the cost of your taxi from the airport.

In addition to the above, that price is probably for 1 driver, you have to pay locally if you want an additional one with Hertz.

I have many times rented cars here (I'm American) and the exact price at the end of the rental is often a few cents or maybe a dollar different from the estimate. Why this should be I am not sure.
The one-way drop charge is sometimes left ambiguous or not quoted correctly and you should try to get a firm quote in writing. It can be hundreds of dollars, though probably not in California, where there are zillions of cars running around. The drop charge is in case they have to pay to get it transported back to where it started.
Some car companies will allow a second driver for free; otherwise it can be about $7 a day. We generally use Budget for that reason. The second driver may have to be a spouse, but sometimes a business partner or the like is allowed. If you Google something like "car rental second driver free" you should see which ones do that.
Off the top of my head, that sounds like a really high rental cost. I just priced a midsize car for 8 days in LA, taxes included but not insurance (I'm already covered), during spring vacation and it was $148. Southwest Airlines website has a good pricing tool. There are lots of discounts for membership in AAA or Costco, for example. You can Google for that, too.
