We stayed at the Hilton Clearwater Beach hotel in 2006 and we are oing back this year again for a week. It is right on the beach and is only about 30mins drive from Busch Gardens

You may need to know that there is a lot of road building/construction in Clearwater at the moment, 2 weeks ago it took us longer to get from Clearwater to Tampa than it did from Tampa to Orlando so it would be longer than 30 mins drive now. This was at Easter though.

Clearweater is a bit closer than St Pete, but as Unforgiven says, there are endless roadworks around Clearwatewr..so
decisions., decisions!!!

I would think so, it looked like they were building new bridges, rerouting roads etc, this is going on in multiple locations from Tampa right into Clearwater beach.

I stayed at the Embassy Suites in Tampa (2 mins from BG) then went to Clearwater the next day and stayed at a hotel on the beach.

Maybe, but I think you'd have to take the 618 or 275 there to avoid the construction

Ditto! Stayed there for one night last August and went to BG the following day. We really enjoyed the hotel, particularly being right on the beach and next to the pier.

we stayed at the hilton clearwater. But never would again. Paper thin walls, we could hear everything!!! at least twice a day, it would be very difficult to explain that to kids.

St petes beach would be my ideal base. The Don Cesar or Grand resort
