There was a rape as the back of the Walmart on Sand Lake/John Yng last month. The guy was caught and hopefully he will get the beating of his life in prison.
If you are shopping at any Walmart alone please becareful as the security cameras and set up in these stores is poor at best, they are not interested in customer safety only theft prevention. Also if you use the bus to get to the store where this happened the stop is at the back of the store so again I wouldn't recommend using this store anymore use the new one on Turkey Lake Rd as it's in a better neighborhood and closer to the tourist area.

Nothing on the search or I wouldn't have started it. It's something important travelers need to be aware of as it's all too easy to think we are safe in Orlando because of the parks yet many people go to this store which is off the tourist trail with rose tinted specs not realizing it's not in a great area. I used to shop their until the new store opened on Turkey Lake Rd.

As for the rape it didn't happen in the store but behind it where the delivery area, Lynx Bus Stop and Tire & Lube garage is. Very close to people walking by doing shopping.

Thanks for the info - I occasionally go on my own but use the one on the 27 close to 192, and do drive there and park out front.

As you say there's no guarentee of safety just because you're in Orlando and people need to keep their guard up wherever they are.

Nasty business!!

Sorry do not agree with you there, if because of one incident people stop using the place we would soon all run out of places to go. This incident hit the news because the lady was raped at gunpoint with her child in the car, if there had been a rape but not with the same cirumstances it would probably not have hit the news. or if it did not make the headlines.

Check out the Orlando Sentinel site which shows this years murders in the Orlando and Orange County area.

There has been a murder not far from the Florida Mall this year, does that now mean we all stop going there.

The main thing is to not totally switch off to the dangers that could be around you, no matter where you are.

I must admit I find this shocking and I think most people would, but is it worse because it is where we are going on holiday????
How many rapes do you hear of in UK - well actually thinking of it less and less because it happens so often that it isn't reported on the news anymore, they have progressed to the law abiding citizens who get a beating for protecting their families/property and die.
I think you have to just be careful wherever you are be it on holiday or at home.
Don't let this spoil your holiday!!!!! Just be careful and sensible!!!!

Crime is everywhere, you have to be as vigilant there as you'd be in an unfamiliar area at home.

There was a carjacking at gunpoint in the Universal parking lot when we were there last year, it hasn't stopped us going to the Universal parks but we now try always to park as close to the walkways as we can and be very aware of who is around us when we return to our vehicle.

I bet most of us can recount a serious crime which happened close to our homes, a sad fact of modern life. :(

The crime rate in Orlando as a whole is rather.. questionable shall we say, but it wouldn't stop me from going. I think it's just a case of not letting your guard down because you're on holiday and staying away from unsavoury areas, the touristy places are pretty well policed but nowhere is completely safe.

That is why we rarely leave WDW feel safer there and have no interest in the rest of Orlando especially as our kids are young

Trust me this was one news report that nobody liked to hear. Sad thing is, like others have already said, is that crime is everywhere and Orlando is no exception. I can understand not wanting to leave WDW if you simply want an escape from reality and live in the fantasy and magic of it all but outside of that I wouldn't be afraid or concerned to venture into other areas and explore Orlando for the city that it is and not the 'mouse trap' that the residents (yes, I am one...grew up here) call it a lot.

Basically we all have to practice commone sense rules of safety when traveling anywhere. This is something we should be doing every day but we simply tend to get on with it and let our guards down more than we notice.

Stay safe but enjoy your holiday and Orlando.

:omg: wow, I would never have given a thought to leaving my shopping in the car at downtown day or night. Did your insurance cover you for that? There was an clip on Fox news today about kids fighting in the car park of wet and wild i think, one pulled out a gun and just shot into the air. No one hurt. I hadnt realised they had the car theft crime though, thankyou for warning us.

Sadly it is everywhere. I live just 3 miles from Universal so my DH and I are around I-Drive fairly often and see so many people not locking the doors or keeping shopping in the back seat. It is just an advertisement to someone that is looking to make a quick grab.

I always suggest to our visitors that they keep as much as they can in the boot and make their car look like a local car and not so much an obvious tourist.

The tags on rental cars use to all start with a specific letter years ago but they moved away from that because the break in rate was much higher on those cars.

Don't let it put you off....just take precautions.

There is plenty of crime within WDW too and some quite terrible crimes . Sadly it is a part of our lives everywhere . But thanks UKLAD it never hurts to remind us to be extra vigilant .

Just got back yesterday, I think whilst we were there, there was 3 rapes and 2 murders and a mass girl beating story on the local Orlando news - there was more but I can't remember them offhand.

I don't remember the news being as bad last time I was in Florida, but then again just look at our own news.

I was mugged in Malia in Crete a couple of years ago. A yob went past on a motorbike and snatched my handbag and shopping bags. Luckily he didn't get away with much but I'm really wary now, either at home or on holiday. It's a sad world :confused2

 :wavey: :D Oh my god, all these stories are really scary!! I think because we are going on holiday, we tend to become oblivious to what is going on, as it's WDW and all happy etc..... as some dibbers said, crime is everywhere and we shouldn't let it hinder our expectations. I think we always just have to be vigilent and look out for things. How many of you feel 100% safe here? we are careful here and it's a shame that this is what society has become. I have an auntie who lives in Boca Raton who told me some horrific stories of strangers knocking on motel room doors. Keep doors locked and always be careful!!! We all work too hard and should be excited, but a little cautious. !!

You can see from the Sentinel article that crime is up in Orlando. Whether this is due to the economy, gang, drug, domestic violence or desparation it doesnt matter. Use common sense. Thieves can tell a rental car from a mile away. Try not to keep things in the boot/trunk. Thieves will figure tourists have shopping bags inside. Also, hide the placard that hotels give you when not parked for the night ... its an obvious target.

Dont mean to scare people but want them to be careful and be mindful of your surroundings. The crime rate is far higher in Florida than New York in all 9 catagories.

I think this was the nasty YouTube clip that caused uproar where a gang of girls took it in turns to beat another girl up ... I cant remember off hand but I think all this happened at someones house, and I believe they all knew each other.

But as most people advise, keep your wits about you. If anything/one seems strange or looks suspicous just trust your instincts .... and that goes for anywhere in the world, be it at home or on holiday.
