Can someone tell me if you are liable for customs charges on secondhand goods ??

I met someone yesterday who said that you don't get charged any customs / excise or tax when you buy 2nd hand goods from abroad ? :confused2 .....but I bought some stuff off ebay not long a go and was charged...... :erm:

I don't know how the customs would know how it is second hand anyway, as you normally only write a value on the customs slip don't you ?. :confused2

Does anyone know - and if I have been wrongly charged - how do I get a refund ....??

Is it just an urban myth ?????

I think it's an urban myth - if you are bringing anything into the country then you are liable to tax.

Yes you are liable to pay, but it's a grey area, some charge on the estimated new "value" of the goods, some charge on what you've actually paid!
