DH did the 66 but a very long time ago (talking about 30+ years). We keep thinking about it but don't want to spend days driving

We have been from Anaheim to Vegas and part of that is on Route 66. We stayed for 2 nights at a place called Williams in Arizona, which is on Route66.
Its a little 1 horse town but it was lovely and you get the steam train form here to go to the Grand Canyon.

There isn't that much of Route 66 left, just a few hundred miles of 'two-lane blacktop' the rest has gone, replaced by interstates.

We did part of 66 through Arizona and it was pleasant, but hardly spectacular.

We hit the 66 after the most wonderful scenery imaginable, so it did not compare. The road has iconic status and some marvelous sights along the way, such as the wigwam motels, but it isn't beautiful.

In 2002 we did part of Route 66 ( Arizona/ New Mexico ) and it was everything I imagined
so much so we returned in 2005 with a group of friends ( we shipped our Harley Davidson Motorcycle out to the USA) and did it all again
then again in 2006 we did a similar road trip. in a car

Is a bit rundown and some parts are not very scenic but we adore 66 there is just something about it!!

Holbrook AZ were the Wigwam Motel is is amazing also Seligman AZ home of the famous Sno-cap Diner, another great place is Hackberry General Store ( complete with Red Corvette ) and Williams AZ is a must.
We also stood on the famous Corner in Winslow AZ ( Eagles song )
visited a rodeo in Kingman AZ

all on Route 66

We adore route 66 to us it's a part of how the USA used too be

Maybe I am being a romantic but I love the nostalgia of it all
Steak and Eggs for breakfast in the 50's diner on Route in Kingman AZ
its something that dreams are made of !!

In 2008 we hope to drive the entire Route 66 Chicago to LA

but remember much of the Mother Road is now Interstate 40

If I can be of any help email me

Go On Do it Its what dreams are made of !!!

cheers

We did part of 66 through Arizona and it was pleasant, but hardly spectacular.

this information is not true although it is no longer possible to drive Route 66 uninterrupted all the way from Chicago to Los Angeles, more than eighty percent of the original route still exists and is drivable with careful planning and some good route 66 maps

A lot of the original route has lost the state road 66 designation and was renumbered with different road numbers but it is still part of the original historic route 66, a lot of towns along the route have realized what an iconic status this road holds with people from all over the world, and are renumbering large sections of the original route with brown historic route 66 markers giving the road back it original route 66 designation

And if you do make it to route 66 then one of my favorite stops along the route is twister’s diner in Williams Arizona, it is a remodeled 50s diner and the soda fountain is fantastic, I also spent hours in the route 66 museum in the Harvey house in Barstow

I haven't done the trip, but the programme that you are talking about is "Riding Route 66". You can buy the series on dvd, look on the travel channel website.

I'm looking seriously at this for next year!!! I was going to do it with a friend of mine years ago but she, sadly, died of cancer before we had the chance and I feel it's something I should do for her!! Out of interest, how long would it take to do the Route 66 without rushing too much??

Thanks again everyone for your replies

Louise, I think it will take a good 3/4 weeks to see most of it (ive been speaking to Jan and she is very helpful), I think what we are going to do, is a bit at a time, there is no way we will be able to get 4 weeks off work (not straight off anyway). So, what we are going to do is take our time, but still looking at doing it next august.

Thats what I thought. I would probably do it in two sections then. I really want to stop and experience it all. I can't see my boss giving me a month off either!!!!
