I've been reading up on St Augustine on the internet and really want to have a look round the historic part of the city.
Is this doable in a day? I understand it's about a 2 hour drive from the tourist areas. Would I be better looking at booking a hotel for one night to get the most out of a trip to St Augustine?

Hi Celica
We visit St Augustine quite regularly and it is a lovely place just to unwind it's very Historic and Quaint we are visiting again in June but to ensure we cover everything are staying overnight as we also want to include the Ghost Walk.
There's plenty to see and would suggest it is not do-able in 1 day as it takes approx 2.5 hours to get there and would recommend you do the trolley tour to aquaint yourself after arrival.
If you take a look at http://www.tripadvisor.com/ for instance you can get a good idea of Hotel/B&B's
We are staying at the St George Inn which is at the top of the main street and opposite the oldest school in America in a suite this time, it's also convenient to get the the Information centre where you can also buy tickets for the tours
Hope that helps

Thanx David,
I was already thinking it might be better to book an overnighter! I'd prefer to have the time to look around rather than rushing to fit everything in!!
Claire
We spent about three days there and just about covered everything including a nice boat trip. Very interesting place, well worth the visit.

We always do it in a day but I can assure you we never see and do everything there is and simply scratch the surface. If you have the time to do a night over I would suggest it. It really is a place to explore and enjoy rather than skim the surface and then head back.
I will say that everyone that we've taken up for a day has really enjoyed it and all left saying they'd like to come back. If you did do it in a day I would suggest the trolly ride, the fort and then the shopping just across from the fort. That would cover the very basics and highlights of the town.
This is one of our best places to stay in a bed and breakfast. If you want something a little more personal I would highly suggest that option over a hotel. Of course the option of a hotel on the beach is another great option. Sort of depends on how you want to spend your 2nd day.
