View Full Version : NY theatre
Just been browsing the shows on offer for when i'm there in Jan and i noticed that the play Equus is going to be opening over there in Sept, and Daniel Radcliffe is going to reprising his role from Sept through to Feb 09. I've signed up for an email alert when the tickets go on sale as i didn't get a chance to see him in it over here, so hopefully i can get a ticket for when i am there in Jan.
There's quite a few shows that i want to see, so at least i've got my solo evening planned! So far i've got Chicago, Altar Boyz, Wicked (even though i've seen it, i love it and would love to see the US version!) and Equus on my list of must-sees! :thumbs-up
What? Jersey Boys isnt on your list?
I am so disappointed in you :)
I can see that in London! I've just been looking at dates and stuff, and i think Chicago will have to be scrapped to, as i need to fit Altar Boyz into that slot... that is if it's still showing next Jan. I can see Chicago in London too, so that's not a priority!
This is the site I use for reviews and info but not for discounts.

Tickets for JB are hard to get and expensive but got great reviews. I havent seen it yet. Waiting for the prices to drop.
We saw Chicago in NY 2004 but all four of us fell asleep part way through!! No reflection on the show which was great, we were just knackered from walking all day. Had a pre-theatre dinner in the revolving restaurant at the Marriot which was top notch.

I found this site recently:
www.goldstar.com
It has some great deals on tickets, that may be worth investigating. On another forum I post on, it comes highly recommended.

WE all fell asleep watching Lion King and that too was no reflection it was purely because we had only arrived that day and were knackered.
I should be okay as i'm only taking the train down from Boston, i'm planning to see Altar Boyz that night if it's still showing in Jan 09. There's so much to chose from that i'm trying to stick with shows that i can't see in London, well apart from Wicked that is, i'm going to splash out and get myself top notch seats for that!
39 Steps looks interesting and I can get seats for $49.
In the Heights is the new show but didnt get good reviews.
There are too many choices. Currently 791 shows playing in NYC.
How soon can you reserve seats? 6 months?
Edit: I just looked and Altar Boyz is discounted for $39.99. Keep an eye on future discounts.

39 Steps is on in London too, and dirt-cheap - it's always at the half-price booth. So probably not a priority.
When we went in 2005, we printed off a load of discount codes from a website called Broadway Box - don't know if it's still going. But in the end, the only one we used was for Forbidden Broadway (which you MUST see if you're a musicals fan. Brilliant.)
We didn't see Altar Boyz but I have the CD and wish it would come over here.
Our hotel was opposite Wicked and yes, we did go and see it (booked 6 months before!) We loved it, and the experience of being in a theatre with escalators was quite amazing. Also nice wide seats for us larger people!
We went in March, and the queues at the TKTS booth were very short. I gather that's unusual. We got half-price tickets for several shows on the day, very easily and quickly.
On the night we first arrived, we had already decided we wouldn't see a show that night, because we expected that jetlag would catch up with us and we'd fall asleep. But by the time we'd been in NYC for 2 hours, the buzz hit us, and we booked for 'Musical of Musicals' at the Dodger Stages. We laughed like drains, we weren't at all tired, and the joy of being able to walk home from the theatre in 10 minutes was wonderful.
What hotel did you stay at, Peter?
I'm going to check out all the links given for discounts.
Tomnj - some of the shows you can book for next year, Wicked for example is booking up until 9th Jan 09 at the moment, which is perfect for me. Currently Altar Boyz is only booking up until Sept, but i'm hoping it's goin to be extended.
The hotel we stayed at isn't there any more! It was the Howard Johnsons. Being refurbished at the time (obviously a lost cause) so the corridors were a bit chaotic, and the restaurant was closed. But it was so near to everything, there wasn't a problem. Five minutes' walk to Times Square - heaven!

Some great links here - thanks.
We are doing a show in November, but still think it will be Mamma Mia for us
The TKTS booth downtown at the Seaport allows you to purchase tickets for the next day's matinee. So stop in if at the Brooklyn Bridge you can do that night's shows and tomorrow's matinee at the same time and the crowds are smaller.
They only accept cash or traveler's checks. Also, I believe the mid town TKTS booth is still in the Marriott Marquis during construction of Duffy Sq.

Thanks for the tip about being about to get next day mat. tickets at the Seaport outlet, that's very handy to know! I'll probably use that one if i do decide to do a last minute booking... Times Sq is a bit too hectic for me!
I figured you may get better seats and more choices the day before. ALthough some shows may hold out for last minute walk-ins.
