View Full Version : DH's 50th B'day - 1 week for 5 in October
Hi Everyone :wavey:
I'm looking for suggestions and hopefully a break to the family deadlock of 'what to do for Dad's 50th'.
We have always worked on the assumption that we would go to NY this October for my DH's 50th b'day, but now he just doesn't fancy it and there is nothing that we can come up with that everyone fancies.
The restrictions are these: just one week in mid October (school commitments prevent otherwise) - so Australia is out!, and somewhere warmer than here - so city breaks to Eastern Europe are out too, and we don't do beaches in a big way
The kids are all coming - DS17 and DDs 15 and 12.
We are fortunate enough to have been lots of places already so don't want to do the Canaries or Florida again this year.
Every time I suggest somewhere, one of the 5 of us says - 'that's not for me'.
I think my options are these:
just tell DH he's going to NY anyway!
New Engalnd to look at the fall colours
the Caribbean - we've never been and I'd love advice on which island would keep teenagers amused
but what do you all think - where do you suggest I look?
That's a goog idea, tomnj......

How about a Caribbean cruise, or even Dubai?

How about Sharm El Sheik, thinking of it for Oct. in a few years and kids will be much the same age as yours.
But if possible I would try and swing him to NY. At the age your kids are they will love it.
Combination. Fly to NY for a few days then do a 5-day cruise to Bermuda.

Wouldn't recommend New England for teenagers mine would be bored stiff!
Another vote for a cruise though haven't been personally.
DH & I went to Vegas last year & loved it but didn't take the kids.
disney owl, that's what DH siad about New England with the kids! He did an impression of them going 'look a leaf! Can we go home now!' which convinced me I was barking up the wrong tree.
Everyone thinks NY is a great idea - so I will continue to push. But I've looked at cruises for that week and can see that may be a good way to go too.....

How about combining the 2 and doing a transatlantic cruise to NY on the QM2?

I kind of agree about New England. Its ok for a couple who want to wander around the mountains staying in B&Bs. But for an active family not so sure it will work. Also, the leaves turning is hard to predict. The peak colors occur on different days each year and you may by chance miss it.
Add: Is it possible to leave the kids with someone and you two go off alone?
I just re-read your OP and I now see you have only 1 week. My suggestion of a few days in NY then pick up a cruise wouldnt work. Although I did think your family may enjoy scootering around Bermuda.
Sorry. Cant think of anything else besides what was already mentioned.

That's lots of great ideas.
DD threw a spanner in the works when she came home with a note from school to say she could go on an art trip to NY next Easter, but school has just rung to say that's now not going to hpapen.
so DH said, well maybe we should relook at the NY option.... So I think I'll strike whilst the irons hot and go with NY! but he does also like the look of a 7 night cruise round the greek islands which I found, following all your suggestions....
And as for leaving the kids at home, I can see how that might be appealing but DH wants us al to go somewhere together. and, tbh, we only have a few months left with DS17 at home, and then DD15 will be off doing her own thing very soon..... so we want to take the chance to spend time with them whilst we still can.....
Price them all up and have a basic itinerary and see which one works best for everyone.
Both sound great.
