View Full Version : Computer Help!!!
Can anyone help pls??? My laptop wont connect to the internet wirelessly....Ive tried everything I can (not much) to fix it...The wireless connection is working, the modem is working (Im on the main computer)...there are no viruses...
I may have deleted a programme accidentally:blush: so have tried to do a system restore, but it keeps telling me it cant restore it back to the date I choose as the computer hasnt changed.....I was trying to delete a search engine toolbar I didnt use....
The computer just goes onto the internet search screen then freezes, I have to close it down via the task manager...everything else works, email, DVD player etc...ITS DOING MY HEAD IN!!!! Sometimes the CPU usage on the task manager is showing 100%, but there is nothing in the box to say what the usage is...GAH!!!:cry:
Anyone any ideas?? I called the Virgin Media helpline at 25p a minute, n all the chap's greetings took up about 3 mins, I could barely understand what he was saying, and it was a bad line too, so he didnt really help much.....It was working fine the other day!!!
Next option is horsing the lappy out the window!!!
Thanks for reading:thumbs-up

hi min
firstly what progam did you delete? secondly what browser are you using to search the net, if you are using IE what version, if 6 download 7 and see if it works then if still not working download firefox and try that, now if nothing works, instead of trying for hours and hours trying to fix it can you restore the pc using the discs provided when you bought it its quicker than trying to fix it...but back up everything first
Ah Mick, if only I knew what programme I deleted....I did it last night as I was doing some housekeeping, then discovered the tinternet didnt work....I am using internet explorer 7, however I cant get onto the net at all...it just brings up the IE page then freezes. I do have a restore disc, but have never had to use one before!! Is it difficult??
Thanks for your help:thumbs-up

First off you do have a wireless card in the laptop?
Have you connected the laptop to the modem via ethernet to make sure it's working that way?
If your CPU is running at 100% you have something running in the background what virus software do you run not Norton is it? As this is a system hogger!
Also sometime you need to change the channel in the modem/routers menu try something like channel 1 by default most times it's on 6.

Restore is fine though i'm not a fan of it as it can mess things up.
Sounds to me that your network settings aren't correct if you can't access a page.
Scott.
Hey Scott:wavey:
Yep, there is a wireless card in the computer, and yes Im running Norton, but Im stuck with it as it came as part of the Computers at Work Scheme....
How do I change channel on the router? And away to plug the lappy to the ethernet wire directly to see if that works!!!
Thanks for your help, thanks Mick too, if I forgot to mention it!!!:thumbs-up:thumbs-up

Just plug the ethernet cable from the laptop to the back of the modem / router and see if it does anything.
Norton is shocking thats your problem with the cpu power!
I'd uninstall that if i was you and put something like AVG on it.
To change the channel you will need to access the router page first so you need to access this by connecting your computer to the router.
Then in your browser window you'll need to type in the web address to access it like 192.168.0.1
What make is the router/modem? and Who's your isp?
Hi Scott, just got back in from work!!!
My isp is virgin media....my main comp is working, and the laptop is too apart from the internet....grrr
Cant help but think it must be a fault, as surely the restore point would have solved the problem if I had deleted anything important....It keeps telling me it cant restore it as the computer hasnt changed!!!:mad2::mad2:
The router is a Lynksys...
Still footering around, appears not to work with the ethernet cable in the back of the lappy, however going to redo this....will reinstall as a last resort, but as you can tell Im not very techy!!!
Thanks again for the help!!:thumbs-up

Im not techy either...but my laptop only goes on the internet with the wireless router if I ask it to!! I have to go in to the connect program and select the router and then press to find/update wireless networks ....it lists all wireless networks it can find then it connects to the right one. it does have an apply feature but it never works I have to do it manually everytime. hope that makes sense!!!

min try typing in 192.168.1.1 in the address bar in the browser at the very top of the screen firstly to see if you can access the router, if not i will tell you in the manual along with the username and password

if you have to do that everytime when you connect does it ask you to save it so it connects automatically everytime after that?

thanks Mick it is WPA not sure about the psk or +wpa2...but you can't get on to my network without the IP number thingy! sorry didn't mean to highjack post
No problemo HB!!!
OK now Im going off my head!!
I cant get my lappy to link to the internet...it seems to freeze any other windows I open, once its frozen on the IE page it just says connecting then wont do anything...the window at the bottom says I have a good strong connection with my router....
The foreign chap at Virgin Media says my modem is fine....I tried to link the lappy to the main comp with the ethernet cable, and managed to lose my connection at the main comp too, however as you can see I got it back....Still no joy with the lappy tho...getting fed up now...
Do you think I should try to reload the router onto the lappy? Or just redo the whole thing with the rescue disc whadyamacallit...bearing in mind I cant get ANY access to the internet on it, and have no clue what Im doing....:cry:

I was going to say the same firewall turned on? If it is switch it off untill you connect dont worry about leaving it for a bit i says it's 99.9% chance no one will hack you or anything.
Also as Mick has said above have you switched wireless on? IS there a light that come son the laptop to tell you wireless is on ( i have this on my laptop)
I don't thinkthere's a problem at all with the hardware it's just a link up problem thats the problem i had some issues with my laptop and router till i changed the channel over to number 1 .
Whats the make of the laptop and are you in Win xp or Vista?
Scott..
Wooooo Hooooo!!! Im fixed!!!!!! YeeHar!!!!!:spin::thumbs-up:thumbs-up:D
