As some of you know i bought dd a laptop for her birthday 4 week ago. She has been typing her coursework up in rough at school and then tranferring it to her memory stick and then to her laptop, to my Documents. She now wants to edit it all but it won't allow her to do so. It comes up as Protected Document:confused2. Any ideas as to how we get the protection off. It is Vista BTW

Thanks :wave:

I presume her laptop is running vista, so right click on the document, then go into properties and click on the security tab. Check that her user name has permisson to modify ticked, if not click on the edit button to allow it.

Make sure the documents aren't 'Read Only'.

Right click -> Properties -> Uncheck Read-only

try going back to where the document was originally, click copy, paste into the memory stick, then check the document on the memory pen, right click, properties, check its not read only/protected. if it is uncheck it, then transfere it onto your documents, and then check again if its read only/ protected then try to open it.

I've tried that too but with no luck :( It was typed up using Microsoft Office which was a 60 day free trial, but she has only had it 24 days:confused2 Think i will take it back to Comet and see if they can solve the problem. No doubt they tell me to ring technical support which will cost me an arm and a leg. :angry:

Thanks guys :wave:

She needs to re-take ownership of this document, right click, go to properties, go into security, and select advanced. Under the advanced tabs there should be one that says "Ownership" and somewhere around there she needs to click "Take Ownership".

I'm not on my Vista Machine so I cant see the exact options, but the above is approximately correct, if you cant find it or it doesnt work PM me for my email, you can email me the file, and I will happily unlock the file for you and send it back, or at least rescue the content of her coursework. Wont take me more than a few minutes, and I'd be happy to help.

Just seen this and thank you so much for your kind offer it was good of you to offer your time. We did however take it back to Comet yesterday and got it sorted. As i said in my previous post it came with a 60 day free trial (Microsoft Office Student) but you only have it for 60 days providing you only use it once a day otherwise your free trial ends sooner, which it did and we didn't know. :confused2
Anyway each time she tried to edit the document she couldn't as the default was set to MOS. The guy at Comet just changed the default setting to Microsoft Word and it works fine now :D

Hope i explained it right :wave:
