View Full Version : Things to do in/around Southampton/Portsmouth
As my signature says, we are having a weekend in this area at the end of this month. We will have free half of Saturday afternoon and all the evening and all day on Sunday. So not a huge window of opportunity for exploring. Please help and tell me what are the must-sees in or around the area.
One thing I would like to do but it's not a must do as we couldn't afford to eat there - is to take a look at John Burton Race's restaurant but I haven't a clue where it is! Ooops, I've just discovered it's in Dartmouth!!!

We recently took the in laws for a day around Gunwharf, it certainly filled the day, we went and looked at the Victory, Mary Rose and also did the boat trip around the harbour. Some lovely restaurants too in Gunwharf. It's a good day out.

Another vote for gunwharf quays and the harbour tour.
On the Sunday you could even go to the isle of wight for the day from Southsea on the hovercraft, you can get an all inclusive ticket for the hovercraft and buses all over the island - we had a great day doing just that.

I too would say gunwharf and the naval dockyard and the ferry. you can get ticket for the naval dockyard with your tesco vouchers.

Thanks Clare, I'll look into that.
Isle of Wight sounds good too.

We been to Gunwharf Quays and the Historic Docks and enjoyed both of them.
I thought that John Burton-Race's reataurant was in Dartmouth, or has he opened a new one?

Hey Jan, you could always pop to mine for a cuppa!
I think Gunwarf would be an enjoyable day for you, plenty of shops and restaurants. Take a trip up the Spinnaker Tower-you'll see for miles around. The Isle of Wight is always a good day out as someone mentioned earlier. Whatever you choose to do I'm sure you'll have a fun day.

Hi shame you haven't got longer as is a beautiful area with the new forest where you can also find Beaulieu Car Museum/Abbey/Palace, on the Isle of Wight there are to many sights to see from Cowes to Sandown, Blackgang Chine and the Oyster/Pearl centre, all fantastic as been to them all, enjoy choosing :) is a great part of the country have family there and spent many holidays there

Where are you staying and will you have use of a car? Winchester is always nice for a summer afternoon and evening about 10 miles north of Soton, lots one off things to see and shops. Then Sunday my vote too would be Gunwharf, the royal dockyard and there are also loads of other military museums in portsmouth. Fort Nelson on the hill is good and FREE. Have a good time whatever.
Julia - we're staying in Havant and we have a car. I shall look up Winchester on the map. Thanks.

If the weather turns out nice you are not far from West Wittering beach.
Check here for more info. http://www.westwitteringbeach.co.uk/
Afterwards you could have a proper fish & chip supper at the Boulevard Cafe in East Wittering. http://www.boulevardcafe.co.uk/
We live not too far from here and this is what we do on a nice Saturday pm. Gunwharf is the bees nees though for a relaxing Sunday.

we used to holiday in Portsmouth every year as a child and we loved it there. Can't suggest anything different, but reading this has brought back so many memories
