Is there a beach near New York? Can anyone recommend anywhere to stay there and let me know what else is in the area.
Many thanks

Coney Island is the beach area closest i think. You can get the subway there.

Most rich New Yorkers holiday over the summer in the Hamptons (http://www.hamptonstravelguide.com/) though. I read an article about the Hamptons in the Sun a few weeks ago, it sounds like a fantastic place for a vacation. It's about a 2.5 hours drive from Manhattan, there are public bus services available - http://www.hamptonsjitney.com/ or you can get the train - http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/lirr/
Well worth a visit if you are there during the summer, it's definately on my list of places to visit in the USA. :)

What about Atlantic City? It's a 2 hour drive from NYC and has a fabulous Boardwalk, sand dunes and beach. Very casino orientated if you like that kind of thing, a bit like Las Vegas by the seaside. It also has loads of shops! We went for a day trip from NY (January) and really enjoyed it. Would imagine it would be really great in the summer.
