When we went, we stayed in the Golden Tulip Ambra Palace, nice and centrally located and big well-furnished rooms,
WAs a bit worried beforehand as had read some bad things about the area being dodgy but its actually fine, lots of nice places to eat and never had any trouble

We stayed at the capo d 'africa hotel and it was great. Not near other tourist hotels, but right near the Colliseum. we found it easy to get about by walking or catching the tube system. the rooms were really nice as was the continental breakfast. There was a great family run restaurant around the corner which served great food and was always busy with locals which is always a good thing especially as we travelled in January. The hotel has also featured on the bbc holiday programme once. reasonable rates to about £100 per night which is about the minimum for a tidy hotel in Rome
