Just came back from a few nights in Vegas, staying at the Bellagio with a lake view room. Amazing hotel and lobby and a casino that pays rather well too!
First night we saw Barry Manilow at the Hilton, which happened to be his birthday. A fantastic show, and I wouldn't normally rave about Barry Manilow!! All his songs were sung in a strong powerful voice for quite a small man, including Mandy, Could it be Magic, Copacobana, a 60's medoly and a few songs I hadn't heard of including a couple of lovely and very well sung ballads. He was great with the audience, dancing with one of them, joking and interacting really well, and connecting with us being a very genuine man with a great voice. Afterwards it was cake and champagne to celebrate his birthday as we exited the theatre. A great ending to a fantastic showy/cabaret type concert.
The next night was a different sort of concert with Elton John. He was smaller than I thought and had pt a bit of weight on. In saying that, what a night!! He started off by having a go at Celine Dione, calling her a skinny b****, saying a few choice words about her and her weight! He sang all his hits including Your Song, Benny and the Jets, Daniel, Bitch is Back, Saturday Night, Candle in the Wind, Pinball Wizard and so on. For an hour and a half he sang his heart out as a power house with an amzing Rocket Man as my personal highlight - a 10 minute version with a brilliant piano solo. As a backdrop there were strange abstract short films depicting varous songs, though they had me not really inderstanding what was going on at times. With minimal special effects, and the occasional surpirse it was an awesome night, different from Barry, perhaps better in my view (I knew more songs) and he was a great man, really appreciative of his audience. All in all another fantastic show, to be seen again.
Just thought I would share those reviews with you in case you were wondering wich one to see if you are going to Vegas - expensive shows but as a one off holiday treat (or 2!), well worth it. Not great as I would recommend both, perhaps Elton just edging it!
If any one else has any reviews I would be interested in comparing to see if you had the same thoughts as me.
Cheers.
