http://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=11600&stc=1&d=1214822367Walt Disney World is shutting down the six nightclubs at Pleasure Island to make its party district at Downtown Disney more family friendly.

BET SoundStage Club, Mannequins Dance Palace, 8Trax and three other clubs that have for years catered largely to young, single adults -- rather than to Disney's bread-and-butter family market -- will close after Sept. 27.

During the next couple of years, Disney will reopen the Pleasure Island venues with a broader mix of restaurants and shops.

Pleasure Island's change has been the subject of rumors for a while. Now 19 years old, it may have seemed an odd venture for Disney, but it appeared to thrive -- so much so that some in the industry have blamed it for accelerating the decline of the nightlife district in downtown Orlando during the 1990s.

Walt Disney World Resort Unveils Bold New Vision for Downtown Disney
Plans Include New and Enhanced Shopping, Dining and Other Experiences

Walt Disney World Resort unveiled a new vision for Downtown Disney, with extraordinary new shopping, dining and other experiences including a completely re-imagined Pleasure Island. Also planned are numerous enhancements to popular Downtown Disney locations, as well as additional theming and storytelling brought to life by Walt Disney Imagineers.

“We are committed to offering guests new and exciting experiences they can only have at Walt Disney World Resort,” said Downtown Disney Vice President Kevin Lansberry. “Our bold new vision for Downtown Disney reflects the feedback we receive from our guests each and every day and will enable us to continue to offer the high-quality entertainment that is our hallmark.”

Over the next year, the 120-acre entertainment-shopping-dining complex will add a number of one-of-a-kind, immersive experiences for guests. Downtown Disney will even get its own iconic attraction, in the form of a giant, tethered balloon that will take guests 300 feet into the air to view the amazing vistas of Walt Disney World Resort. Other new experiences include:

· In fall 2008, guests will enter a world of prehistoric creatures at T-Rex: A Prehistoric Family Adventure. The dinosaur-themed family eatery will serve up pizzas, pastas, seafood and more, and will feature life-size animated dinosaurs that dwell among bubbling geysers, waterfalls and a fossil dig site.

· Also this fall, a design-your-own t-shirt store from Hanes will add to the growing collection of merchandise guests can personalize at Downtown Disney.

· E-brands Restaurants, an Orlando-based, multi-concept restaurant group, will premier its newest concept at Downtown Disney in spring 2009. The high-energy, casual eatery will feature authentic Central and South American cuisine, specialty drinks and live music along the waterfront.

Guests also will enjoy a brand new mix of shopping and dining experiences at Pleasure Island as it is transformed over the next two years.

“Our guests tell us they want additional shopping and dining experiences at Downtown Disney,” added Lansberry. “We are currently considering a number of unique concepts from around the globe as we re-imagine Pleasure Island and look forward to sharing our progress over the coming months.”

To make way for the new offerings, all of the clubs currently on Pleasure Island will close on Sept. 27. Other locations on Pleasure Island , including Raglan Road , Fuego by Sosa Cigars, Curl by Sammy Duval, Orlando Harley-Davidson and outdoor food and beverage locations, will remain open during the transition.

To complement these new experiences, many popular Downtown Disney locations will undergo enhancements.

· Beginning this summer, Portobello Yacht Club will be transformed into a Tuscan Country Trattoria. The refreshed menu features authentic Italian dishes and signature favorites and a re-designed interior along with an outdoor dining space.

· This fall, Goofy’s Candy Company will add a special new room that will enable families to host one-of-a-kind birthday parties at Downtown Disney.

· The Marketplace Stage will be completely replaced with a larger, covered stage this fall to welcome even more entertainment to Downtown Disney and serve as a new premier venue for Disney Magic Music Days.

· Fulton’s Crab House will update its interior fixtures and furnishing and exterior in Spring 2009. The enhancements include a refreshed third floor deck dining area to offer additional Disney guests and larger private parties the traditional Fulton’s experience.

· Next year, Wolfgang Puck Café will update its interior fixtures and furnishings and will feature an enclosed glass patio offering guests a year-round outdoor dining experience.

These efforts come on the heels of recent enhancements at World of Disney, Wolfgang Puck Express, Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop, Earl of Sandwich and Cap’n Jack’s Restaurant.

I'm really pleased to read all these changes that are planned.
Never really been impressed with P.I and an enhanced big and better DTD will be very welcome in my eyes rather than the current setup :thumbs-up

Hi! While I agree that PI has been ready for an overhaul for a long time now, i think that Disney are making a mistake by taking away the "adult" side of evening entertainment by closing all of the venues, especially Adventurers' Club, as they offered something a little more exclusive to adults, single or couples, who wish to go for a dance and a drink "out of hours" after a Disney day or even to celebrate an event, e.g. birthday or anniversary; also the bars in the resorts seem to close around midnight which u may think is reasonable but after extra magic hours or a show, when u get back to resort and fancy a beer or 2 before bed, the option offered to us on our last visit was "why don't you go to P.I. for a couple?", something which after Sept. will now presumably no longer be an option and I presume that the bars in resort will not remain open for longer to accomodate this change?
It seems that Disney is yet again taking something away from a large part of their market - the adult only group - and I feel quite sad about this... obviously Disney is child-friendly and predominantly for families, but we adults are a large group too!!!
Come on Disney, give us a reason to come and have a night out without being bombarded by "the kids" - we get enough of them during the day!!!
Whilst on the subject, Disney should also offer a quieter, maybe adult-only option for dinner, as sometimes when u want a romantic meal it is ruined by the screaming kids running around or simply not being considerate of couples on an anniversary, etc., and this is something I too wish could be addressed.
Don't get me wrong, I like kids (otherwise I couldn't hack Disney for 2 weeks) but a little consideration and a choice for a quiet area wouldn't go far wrong!!!!! 'Bye xxx :):confused2:wavey:

I was never really a fan of PI but I can understand why ppl like it. And as for calling the changes new and 'one of a kind' that baloon concept sounds exactly what they've already got at Disneyland Paris, just outside of the New York hotel. It seems to me as they've tested the idea there and now they know it works they're brining it over like they did with Lights Motors Action.

Personally I am disappointed by the change - especially the loss of The Adventurers Club. I think there is a need for adult venues, although the loss of the other clubs doesn't mean as much to me. It all goes back to the business philosophy of market segmentation - I think the family market is adequately catered for elsewhere in Disney, and I don't see how making PI an extention of Westside or DTD will increase turnover beyond the potential negative of not catering for the 21-30 year olds. It must be a policy decision based on avoiding increased security etc. It will I imagine be a boon for Universal as City Walk will be the undoubted leader in this area now. I do hope The Adventurers Club lives on in some form though.

I'm really disappointed too we normally leave the children with parents and go to the comedy warehouse for a couple of evenings and really enjoy this adult only time.

I think disney does need to leave a bit of adult only space it's not like they are really short on space - they could use somewhere else to develop some of these bits

Although I never went to the clubs at DTD, I can totally appriciate those who will mourn the loss. It does seem extreme of Disney to remove all of the clubs.

Was it something I said???? We were stopped in PI back in April and answered some questions. They then e-mailed a very extensive survey about DTD and PI to which I answered completely as I found it on the night in question. Our visit was memorable but for the wrong reasons. More from a "never going there again" perspective. We, like others, have spent many many happy and fun evenings just wandering about, soaking up the atmosphere, waiting for New Year, etc, etc. However, there's no New Year, no shops and no atmosphere - mainly because there are no visitors.

We felt all alone and a bit noticeable (we were approached several times by the same guy trying to get answers to his survey). We went to the Comedy Warehouse which was nearly full and it was the same old same old. When the show finished the people just disappeared.

I am not surprised quite frankly that it will all close. Disney have tweaked this place over the years and have trimmed bits off here and there - what do they expect? As I said in my survey - people vote with their feet and they are more likely to have a better evening in City Walk. I think it is a shame that it has come to this.

We personally don't use the clubs, we never have as it's just not our thing..even though we don't have kids. We much prefer to browse the shops and have a couple of drinks with a meal, so for us this is good news.

But everybody is different and I can understand why some people don't want the clubs to close. I certainly understand 'bouncygirls' point about wanting a drink later than 12am some nights to unwind. But I can also see Disney's angle...why have clubs that are empty a lot of the time and losing money when they can have more shops and restaurants that will make money...especially restaurants in peak season when it's hard to get reservations. They would make more money from a diner than a drinker, even without the shops.

I would love to see a couple of restaurants with a more relaxed bar area aswell, like ESPN at Disney Boardwalk for example...I love the atmosphere in there, especially when a game is on. A huge huge huge ESPN at PI would be brill, but I doubt that I'll get that!

I don't think disney is all about families. I know this is a very large part of it but there is a lot of adults that go without children. I personally think its a shame they are closing PI, although it maybe did need revamped to appeal more. I agree that City Walk will benefit. Lets hope there is still somewhere you can chill without the children as a night off now and again is well deserved.

I agree Nic......it's not all just about families....loads of couples or adult groups holiday at Disney.....I think Disney are shooting themselves in the foot by closing all the clubs.....I think a lot of people that liked a night out there will now head to Citywalk.....maybe even choosing to stay in a Universal hotel rather than Disney

Well if Disney is all about families, my husband and I have been in the wrong place for years now :erm: Yes we started to go when our kids were little and we enjoyed everything the parks had to offer. However when they reached the age when they no longer wanted to go with us, we started to enjoy more adult entertainment in PI. We are not clubbers but do enjoy the AC and the CW and would go most nights thanks to our Premium Annual Passes.

A good night for us would be a meal at DTD followed by the cinema and one (or both) of the comedy clubs.

However, I doubt we'll even go to DTD at all in future as we really are not in to 'Disney' shops :zzz: It will be City Walk for us. Hmm we are going to Vegas in September :D We went in 2006 and had a blast, especially in the evenings when we saw some fantastic shows. I can see Vegas becoming the new Florida for us. The closure of PI may turn out to be not such a disappointment after all :spin:

Which is part of the attraction isn't it? :tounge:

Seems a shame that so many people think that the closing of the clubs at PI is good just because they don't use them - if you don't use them, then it doesn't effect you surely?

Non-families are welcome at Disney too, after all...maybe next they should stop showing anything by "E" (or whatever the US equivalent for "U/PG" is nowadays) films at the AMC in Downtown Disney? Should probably axe Disneyquest too, as that is definitely not a "family" thing in my experience. :tounge:

Frustrating.

We only found Comedy Warehouse and Adventurers Club last summer - and yes they were cheesey, but they were fun. We don't have kids, and don't get me wrong - we get the Disney = Families + Kids thing - but it was quite nice to have a fun kid-free environment.

Ah well - let's see what they do to the place...

It is a shame that they are going to close Pi but it has been on the decline since they stopped the bars being ticketed areas only.
I remember when you used to be able to go th PI and have New years Eve every night i had so many fun nights there.
We have booked to go in June next year for my 40th i had thought about going to for my night out will not be able to now

Ah well

Let`s see what they put in place then.....

Okay so i'm not sure i can comment as we are going to Florida for the first time in August but we are a honeymoon couple and to be honest an area where i can escape from children for a night or two...or 14!! sounds like bliss to me.
Do disney know City Walk exists??? Because in speaking to alot of people i know about this who are regular Disney'ers they recon they will head to City Walk instead now.
Not everyone who goes to Disney has kids in tow. Do they have a Disney babysitting service in DTD? If not why didn't they think of that to give the adults a break and enjoy some adult company for a change? Just because your parents doesn't mean you can't have some alone time. Just an idea Disney if you haven't already had it...

Jude

P.S. I will gladly take any royalties for the babysitting idea hahaha :d:

I can see your point & i think that the more popular clubs should have stayed & perhaps made the others more family friendly. I may be in the minority here, but... when i'm on holiday i like to have my kids with me I wouldn't want to put them in a kids club etc just because when we're at home i don't feel like i spend enough time with DD & DS, so our holiday for us is 'family time' & we're looking forward to the changes at DTD.

Well, you'll probably enjoy it more now that they're not forcing you to put your kids into a kids' club any more then, the way that they did previously?

Or perhaps I'm misunderstanding your sentiment and they didn't actually enforce this before, instead giving people the option as to whether or not they wanted to spend time at Pleasure Island. (I know that personally it's never appealed, and as such I've opted not to spend time there myself. Hm...) :tounge:

Hi, we never did put the kids into kid's clubs (nothing wrong with that though if thats what anyone wants to do), we just stayed away from DTD in the evening. I think there were some places that you can have your children with you & some that have age restriction, or maybe i'm mistaken?

I think its kind of sad that they're closing PI, it was nice to have somewhere different to go and it was nice to have somewhere which was more adult orientated for a change. The new places sound good, but I'm with some of the people who commented before, I hope they have somewhere is more for adults! I have nothing against children, just sometimes its nice to be just grown ups.

:cry::(:cry:

I am absolutely DEVASTATED!!!

There are no other words...

{sniff}

We have has such great times there on our visits, I can`t even begin to think of life without `THE ADVENTURERS CLUB` , in fact im not even going to think about it.... DOH! there I go , thinking about it again.

I`m not as saddened by some of the other parts of PI as I will have to admit it`s been in gradual decline for a few years , BUT I think this is entirely of Disneys doing and people shouldn`t be surprised by many sad supporters of PI who loved the place and enjoyed the night-time fun and frolics being in despair.

We spent my wifes b`day there in 2005 in `8trax` and it was a fantastic night.not so for Dad-in-law who babysat 4 screaming kids...ahem.Top bloke.

I hope `The Adventurers Club` idea / ethos will live on somewhere else or in another guise as I truely believe there is plenty of scope to make a family friendly version , after all it was never too over the top and only some of the humor was slightly risque. We have witnesed many 7 - 16 yr olds in there at the start of the evening with thier families having a great time.

I think the fact that it was :-

a/ called a "CLUB" and
b/ in PI

put many people off and they never got to sample its unique and amazingly interactive brand of fun.

I know im waffling on but today...I felt some great memories put their flags at half-mast...

(was that dramatic enough...:tounge:)

Im gonna have a tipple for `The Adventurers Club` tonight and raise a glass and declare:-

KUNGALOOSH!!!

all the very best

The shock hit the fan when I read this!. Universal have one (or more) over on Disney now. Pleasure island was empty both times we went in recent years. So it is no surprise its been demolished. What does surprse me is the closure of Adventurers Club and The Comedy Club! Both always full or close to it.

It needs a revamp but complete closure is a kick in the teeth. Where do you go for a night out now? CITYWALK. woops

I seen they guys doing the surveys, they targeted families, not the singles couples and 18-30's. Of course they will get negative feedback! Hopefully Disney will re imagine a better nightlife area. But removing some clubs spells disaster. Disney need a nightclub for people to dance.

Maybe they will open a new area on the western front?

Well - they targeted us in their survey 2 50 year olds and 2 late teens - but then, we were the only people around!!! We also fancied an evening without young kids - but to be perfectly honest, to be with any age group would have been good. We were literally the only people there - more staff than visitors.

We used to love the New Year's Eve party every night. Back in 2003 we had a great evening just wandering about and forcing our way through the party revellers. I think Disney are missing a corner of the market if they don't revamp - they'll soon find that their customers will begin drifting to the Kirkman Road area to be able to go out in the evening for a bit of grown up fun.

i kind of think it's a good idea, i remember going to pleasure island when i was a kid back when you had to pay to get in and it was the most boringest thing for a kid, and now that im old enough to get into the clubs im not sure i even want to! although i think the part where virgin megastore is, is more for adults and teens where as the other side is more for kids even though i love both parts.

I for one am going to miss PI. As adults with no children, both DW and myself liked the idea that we could dance the night away at 8 tracs and then get the disney bus back to our hotel. I agree that Disney is a family resort but there are a large amount of adults that go on their own without kids. I know that the boardwalk has adult entertainment but the atmphere is differnt from PI. We are going back to florida in 2009 and were goingto give universal a miss but we are planning to stay a few nights at universal so that we can go out in city walk.:wavey:

Although I have only visited PI twice, i am very disappointed by the closure. As much as I absolutely adore Disney, PI was "time out" for the adults to let their hair down. I loved 8trax. I was going to try mannequins out for the first time too, :-( Nevermind.

Myself and my family are flying out Monday 29th September so we are going to be too late to hit the clubs for one last time. Oh well, i guess everything happens for a reason. I have faith in WDW that whatever replaces the clubs will be good...(I hope so )

Oh cripes. I read just yesterday from the passporter website that this place closes on the 27th Sept. Yep, sorry, I just went back & checked my email for you; it def closes on the 27th Sept. The article in the email makes it very clear you're not the only one who's going to miss it & the Kungaloosh. Well,

being just in a couple with no kids, I'm dissapointed at this move, though more for the folks that stay in WDW

We always stay in the I Drive area and spend most nights around I drive and Universal

The one time weve been to PI I was asked each time for ID, which at 35 was beyond ridiculous (never been asked ANYWHERE else)

Wouldve preferred to see them re vamp the clubs as they seemed to lack much atmos to me but there we go, just means I'll do as usual and keep the WDW visits to the daytime (+evenings for fireworks, of course)
