In the last month my brother's and sister's ACER computers have both 'broken down'. They are different ACER models but the problem seems to be the same ie the power cable is not connecting internally so the battery has gone flat and they are unable to start up the computer.
I have done a search and it would appear that this is a design fault in the ACER computers but I can't find anywhere where it says that ACER will take responsibility for this problem and both computers are out of warranty.
Has anyone had any personal experience of this and know how the problem can be repaired?
As always thanks in anticipation of some knowledgeable dibber being able to help.

Don't know a lot about computers and my DH is at work. What I will say is though could it be the cable?? We have an acer laptop and we were having problems with the power lead and bought a new cable and its fine now - just a thought but as I say I'm not a computer expert!!
Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks Nic, my sisters packed up first and she bought a new power connection and it didn't help, my brother borrowed the new lead to see if it helped but it didn't.
As I said I did find some old info re ACERs having a design flaw and they needed some soldering to repair them.
I just wondered if anyone had a similar experience and how they resolved it.
I'm glad your was only the power lead and nothing more serious. :)

our family had 3 Acers-all with same problem, only 1 in warranty, others too expensive to repair, over £100 because something to do with the motherboard if I remember.Acer denied there is a problem !:mad2::mad2:So all I have done is warn everyone about this-and note Tesco no longer sell them

No but spending time with Acer on the phone I wouldn't hold my breath on them taking any responsibility .. I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole now..
sorry this doesn't help your situation :(
Acer computers - I absolutely hate the things. Everything went well for a year and a day and then it all went wrong. Thank goodness for my lovely Mac Book. I hope you get some joy Heather because I never did and now it has bitten the dust. So has my son's by the way and it is only abot 18 mths old too.

DD has an ACER and has to have it plugged in permanently to use it as the battery life is about 15mins.

Funnily enough, my Dell has just done the same thing!
Got new battery and still no charging, changed the power lead/transformer, still no luck
Contacted Dell, its now just outside the warranty period, and its junk. Not worth the cost of the repair (the power charger inside the lappy has died)
can still use it on mains power, just not as a portable.

Now I'll start to worry - I've had my Dell since summer 2005 and it did pack up in 2006 (under warranty) but so far it's okay.
I wonder what the average life of a lap top is?
I have backed up most things on her in case it 'dies'.
Thanks for your replies guys, my brother is taking his to a friend who tinkers with computers, he doesn't want to pay the £100 + to have someone say it can't be repaired.
As to ACER saying it's not a design fault - I would say our small sample suggest otherwise!!
