Hi Neil,

If it's the odd track you want to convert you can probably do it on line with Media Convert (http://media-convert.com/convert/).

By the way, if that doesn't do it then let me know, I've got another idea.

OK Neil, if you can play the tune on the computer then play it and record it using Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), then export it as MP3, works every time for me.

Easier said than done if you have Vista Paul. with Vista the only default recording input devices are Microphone and Line In which would mean that you can't record a sound played on your computer. There is a fix, just hope Neil has XP or a copy of Linux.

Sean, I was under the impression that any sound you can hear coming out of the computer can be recorded by Audacity, because it records the sound from the sound card. So it's nothing to do with the input, only the output. In fact it specifically states it can be used on Vista.

And this is a list of features it has:

Another free program that may help is the Switch Audio available here (http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html). I use it to create mp3 files to play on my Samsung Tocco and it works pretty well.

All my Itunes are MP3's

Google M4p to mp3 converter, there's loads - you may have to pay for them though & I believe it's probably a breach of copyright.

You are correct, MP3 is proprietary software and not free to use as such, someone has to pay somewhere. OGG Vorbis is copyright free because it's realised under the GPL and is actually a better system, with smaller file sizes and better quality than MP3 can achieve.

Just had fiddle with Audacity and I get 'Error when opening sound device'.

Its quite a well known problem with Vista.

What I usually do get around this problem when wanting to record audio streaming is to use a double ended 3.5mm jack. One end in the Mic and the other in the headphones. Bit of a hassle but it works.

Much easier using Download helper with the songs I want.

Sean, I can see the reason why I don't use Vista now :)

I don't use I-Tunes personally, but I thought it did have an mp3 converter within it, although I maybe wrong.

I used to use Musicmatch Jukebox for years and it was fantastic for playing, converting mp3's. However, it has since been taken over by Yahoo Music and is not so good now. After doing a bit of Internet research at the time, I now use Media Monkey. It is a fantastic all-round audio player and has good facilites for ripping/converting audio tracks and burning cds.

I can recommend it for what you want.:thumbs-up
