Just thought i'd share :) Two adults, mid 20's, first time California and Las Vegas visitors!

18th September: Fly from Manchester to San Francisco. We'll be flying with Continental and changing in Newark. Use the BART or a taxi/shuttle to get from the airport to San Francisco. No plans for today other than find the hotel (Columbus Motor Inn), check-in and unpack.

19th-21st September: 3 full days to explore San Francisco. We have Alcatraz booked for 10:30am on 19th and a Mr Toad's Tour (http://www.mrtoadstours.com/) booked for 11am on 20th. We also want to visit Fisherman's Wharf, China Town, Golden Gate Park and possibly Sausalito too.
The hotel is in an Italian neighbourhood with loads of nice restaurants. I have a list of possible places so we'll probably just head to wherever we fancy at the time. Some definites are: The Cheesecake Factory in Macy's for lunch or dinner, Mama's on Washington Square (http://mamas-sf.com/) for breakfast and the original Mel's Diner (http://www.melsdrive-in.com/).
We decided not to get the car for this section of the trip as the public transport in SF looks like it will be fine for our needs

22nd September: Pick-up hire car from downtown SF and drive to Monterey. Considering going on a whale-watching cruise today which we will book on the day if we arrive in Monterey on time for the afternoon cruise. If we don't make it in time we'll visit the Monterey Bay aquarium instead and do the cruise tomorrow. Spend the night at the Super 8.

23rd September: Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium or go on the whale-watching cruise (depending on the events of the day before!) then drive down Highway 1 through Big Sur to San Luis Obispo (if I lose my nerve there's always the 101 option!) Spend the night at the Vagabond Inn.

24th September: Look around San Luis Obispo then drive to Los Angeles, stopping at Solvang (http://www.solvangusa.com/) on the way there. Check in to the Hollywood Orchid Suites.

25th-27th September: Three full days in Los Angeles. We have tickets for Six Flags Magic Mountain and Universal. Also have the Dearly Departed Tour (http://www.dearlydepartedtours.com/DDT/index.html) booked for 1pm on 27th which sounds awesome so I hope it lives up to the glowing reviews. We're also hoping to fit in the touristy stuff in Hollywood (Walk of Fame etc) which are all within walking distance of our hotel, a visit to the LA Ink shop, indulge our geeky side at the Page Museum (http://www.tarpits.org/) (AKA La Brea Tarpits as seen in My Girl 2!) and maybe do some shopping too!
Again, I have a list of possible restaurants but definite ones are the Disney Soda Shop (http://disney.go.com/DisneyPictures/el_capitan/soda_fountain/main.html), Pink's Hotdogs (http://www.pinkshollywood.com/) and In-n-out Burger
(http://www.in-n-out.com/)

28th September: Visit Santa Monica Pier and/or Venice Beach then drive to Anaheim and check in to the Fairfield Inn. Planning on spending the evening at Disneyland as it's open late and it'll be our only chance to see the fireworks.

29th September-1st October: Anaheim for 3 full days. We'll be visiting Disneyland/DCA for two (we have 3 day hoppers for Disney) and San Diego Zoo for one.
Definite restaurants are Cafe Orleans (http://disneyland.disney.go.com/disneyland/en_US/parks/dining/detail?name=CafeOrleansDiningPage&bhcp=1) in Disneyland and House of Blues in DTD. I also want to try a Tigger Tail in Disneyland!

2nd October: Drive to Las Vegas, we plan to visit a 'ghost town' on the way. Check in to the Gold Coast hotel. I'll be buying tickets to see Penn & Teller (http://www.pennandteller.com/) for either tonight or one of our other nights, just waiting for our dates to become available.
Quite a few if our meals in Vegas are looking to be buffets and definites are the Bellagio (brunch) and the Wynn. Also considering Rio, Paris and Spice Market at Planet Hollywood. Another definite is the Cheesecake Factory in Caesar's Palace.

3rd-5th October: 3 full days in Las Vegas. We definitely want to visit the Hoover Dam so we'll probably combine it with a tour of the Ethel M chocolate factory (http://www.ethelschocolate.com/jump.jsp?itemID=117&itemType=CATEGORY) Other than that we'll probably just play it by ear: Explore the strip and casinos, go on the rides, take lots of photos, play the nickel slots, drink cocktails etc! We plan to visit the cut price ticket booths to see what evening shows are available on our three free nights. Our hotel also has a bowling alley which i'm sure we will visit at least once.

6th-7th October: (time difference means we get home a day later) Drive to Las Vegas airport/drop off car. Flight home to Manchester from Las Vegas (changing in Newark again)

Hi Lizzy, we did a similar trip last year starting in San Francisco and finishing in Vegas. Check out the link in my sig for details. You must do a bike tour over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fran. If you are both mid-20's no excuses!

Looks a fantastic itinerary, I'm sure you'll have a fab time.

That sounds fantastic, just something I would love to do, we'll have to wait until DD7 is much older though.
Have fun.

you have a great plan there-I'm sure you'll have a great time.

did SF/Monterey/Yosemite in 2003-loved Alcatraz and saw most of the sights on your list.A walk up to the Coit tower gives you great views over SF.I'm nearly 50 and managed the streets so you've no excuse!Go and see Lombard street too-the twisty road in Hulk(DH drove down it)

Our whale-watching cruise from Monterey was one of the few in the year not to spot any whales:( and they gave us a raincheck but we were leaving for yosemite next day.Saw hundreds of dolphins though and an elephant seal

We're off to Vegas 28 sept(3 nights) to do drive tour round grand canyon/monument valley/bryce canyon etc so will try not to empty the slots before you get there!:d:

Have fun:wavey:

I'd recommend hiring a bike & cycling over the Golden Gate & then get the ferry back especially if the weather is nice.

Don't forget to watch the fountains at Bellagio at try the 'O' show at Bellagio, its the best show in Vegas!

If you walk down from your hotel to North Point Street in SF there's a nice little night club called Dirty Martini's well worth a visit & theres a24 hr Dennys next door if you get peckish.

Looks good! We are staying in SF, Monterey, Pismo Beach, Hollywood Orchid suites and Anaheim in a few days (also going to Yosemite)

I'll do a trippy when I get back which might help with your planning! (planning to do Mel's in Hollywood)

Sounds brilliant, we did a very similar tour a couple of years ago, starting in San Fran, down to LA via Monterey and Solvang, then over to LA.

Ive just copied bits in below that we found (in case it helps!)...

We have Alcatraz booked for 10:30am on 19th

We enjoyed the visit to Alcatraz, its a good option and its good you booked as when we went in Feb they were turning people away as they only let so many on the island. The boat goes from next to Pier 39 / Fishermans Wharf, so you can do those together easily.

We decided not to get the car for this section of the trip as the public transport in SF looks like it will be fine for our needs

Yep, no need for a car at all, I would say it would be a hinderence!

Visit the Monterey Bay aquarium

We did the aquarium on the way down, it isnt a full day though so you can easily do Monteray itself as well. We stopped at a place called Seaside opposite where you parked you car in the car park and took golf buggies down to private lodges behind the sand dunes, the noise from the sea was amazing. The villas were not expensive at all (about $ 60), called Marina Dunes - you have to call them for the good rate though.

While in the area Carmel is very nice, and if you can find it (Sat nav is good!) Clint Eastwoods pub is there, but its down a little alley (a nice alley) so its hard to find at first! :)

stopping at Solvang (http://www.solvangusa.com/)

We stopped in Solvang overnight instead, its a nice place to spend a couple of hours.

Three full days in Los Angeles. Hollywood. Santa Monica Pier and/or Venice Beach

We found the VIP tour of Universal Studios is excellent, once in a lifetime but very expensive. The guide was great, we got to go lots of places the general public just cant, and still got on all the rides as the guide just called ahead and we walked on every one.

Also, if you have sat nav, you can get right up close to the Hollywood sign, and see all the stars home while touring!

3 full days in Las Vegas.

We found Las Vegas very full on after California, California is all clean, Vegas isnt! Its great though, just wired - a great place to end!

If you get time, in the evening go down to Freemont street downtown, its about $ 20, but the light show is great!

Enjoy the free drinks!!

Im sure you will have a great time, we cant wait to go back!

Thanks for all the replies and tips :) We'll have a sat nav and I bought a California atlas aswell so hopefully we'll be well equipped for navigating!

I'm very jealous!

Hubby and I went to Vegas for his big 4-0 in April - I booked it as a surprise for him. Stayed for a week - could have done with 2!!

I'm sure you'll have an absolutely fantastic time.

If you're interested in shows I'd definitely recommend Le Reve at the Wynn - it was brilliant.

Can't wait to go back for more!

Sound fantastic! :thumbs-up

We saw Penn and Teller at Christmas, but I have to say we were very dissapointed. The show was very old fashioned, nothing had moved on from when they were on our screens in the 90's, they did the bullet in the mouth trick, and it was very 'god bless America' at one point they even burnt the Chinese flag! I think we're used to Derren Brown now, and Penn and Teller just didn't compare anymore at all.

They do come out into the reception at the end of the show though and you can have your photo taken with them!

If you can book at table at The Stratosphere, it's a revolving restaurant at the top, the food and views are spectacular. Not cheap, but well worth it for the whole experience.

We love Las Vegas and San Fransico, you'll have an amazing time!
