View Full Version : Day out at the beach
On our second week in Orlando my DB who lives in California is joining us for a few days. He's not really into doing the parks but I want us all to spend some time together.
We hadn't really planned a day out to the beach when we go to Florida, but I've been thinking now about taking a day out to drive to either Cocoa or Daytona beach. We haven't done this before, and DS14 is convinced it will be boring.
The more I think about it the more I like the idea of driving on the open roads to the coast for a few hours. Which is best Cocoa beach or Daytona and what is there to do for a few hours there. Also how long will it take to get there?

Cocoa Beach is about 45 mins away Daytona 1hr 15 mins, both are a bit tacky, the drive isn't anything special to either of them. There's more to do in Daytona, you have the race track and there's a shopping mall, plus you can drive along the beach. Also if you drive further down the A1A to Ormond Beach, Flagler Beach it's a bit more scenic. About an hour away you've got St Augustine which is lovely and a really nice drive, some fantastic houses on the way. It's possible to do Daytona & St Augustine in a day, as long as you don't mind the drive.
What about going in the other direction to Clearwater ? lovely white sand, the sea is supposedly warmer ( certainly warm enough for swimming when we went in November ) and if your DS gets bored, you could go for a ride on the sea screamer.

Hey JudyC
Like Ali-s suggested have you thought about the gulf cost? the sea is way calmer. We always go to sand key park, which is a state park/beach in st petes.
I love Daytona though and if you are into motor bikes take a 10 min drive north to Bruc Rossmyers harley dealership. it's the size of my local Asda but with 2 floors!!
hope this helps

I agree with jellie we went to daytona this year as my dad hubby and kids wanted to go to the international speedway afterwards we went down to the beach which is about 5 mins away from the speedway and I have to say I was not what i expected!! bit tacky not my scene!! however If you are a beachlover it is an impressive beach! I am not a beachlover at all so not for me!!
Thanks everyone. I think we'll give Cocoa Beach/Daytona a miss, come to think of it I've not really read good reports on either area unless like you say you're into motorbikes. This is probably why I didn't originally plan a visit to the beach.
Now I really like the idea of Clearwater and going on the Seascreamer:) I think DS will be tempted if I mention this as well. Am I right in thinking this will be about an hour and a half drive.
