We have driven past the old town many times but have never experienced it has anyone done it can you let me know if its worth wile
It's a bit quirky, a bit naff and a lot of fun, as long as you don't have overly high expectations. basically a street of touristy type shops, with a couple of bars, some amusements and rides (including some daredevil type ones) and a weekly car parade. Decent fun for no money, and a complete foil to the parks and the Disneyfication of everything there.
Here's their website: http://www.old-town.com/

It's a nice little place with shops, restaurants and rides. It's free entry and free parking so it'd hardly be a waste of money if you went and didn't enjoy it.
Best times to go are Friday and Saturday nights as they host the weekly cruises so it's a buzzing atmosphere most of the time.
Go on and check it out :)

oh yeah it is worth it to see the people on the Skycoaster. Like to have a beer, watch the car parade.. it's a little tacky but I quite like it! Some nice little shops to have a wander around.. haunted house.. dunno what that is like - got to try it this year :confused2
We pop in here every year we go, it is a bit tacky but we still keep going back. :thumbs-up

We love it. My eldest DS loves the badge shop thats there.
Although its not everyone's cup of tea, I think you have to experience it - if only once!! As previously said - nice cheap night and the cars/bikes are absolutely fabulous.

My 3 boys did the sky coaster I can honestly say its the only thing that they have said they wouldn't go back on. They said the bit just before you pull the cord is truely terrifying. We bought the dvds and all I can say is that their language was very colourful and they screamed like girls.

Has anyone else tried the sky coaster? Whats it like? I would love to try it but I'm afraid of bottling it.

It's great! I was in the middle with my sister attached to the side, so I was responsible for pulling the cord. It's really adrenaline-pumping but so, so good once you get going :D
If you bottle out from pulling the cord, they will just auto release it, which imo wasn't as fun as pulling it yourself.

we go every year it's good fun, Friday & Saturday nights are cruise nights one all old cars (in beautiful condition) & the other all 'blinged' up cars (DS in pig heaven), Thursday nights is bike night. The shops are different little independants, a bit tacky but nice to wander through & there's a few takeaways & bars also a little fun fair for kids & the drag racers, go karts & sky coaster, so plenty to do.

hated every minute of it, it is dirty, run down with very unsavoury characters. it used to be a lovely place with a diner owned by an english family which had a mock up dungeon and london bus which you could eat your meal in, always packed with families.:omg:

I quite like it as an alternative night time activity, espicially watching the cars at a weekend. I also enjoyed eating good old pie and chips at the fish and chip shop. Worth stopping at.

it's nice to just go and have a look, i like the flippers there and i love eating in checkers! i like having a look in all the different shops, my favourites are the western shop and the 60's themed shop. Even though i hardly buy anything there i just like walking round and having a coke in the bars lol seeing as im not old enough to drink :( although the bike night is my favourite :) and i go there manily for that.

We love Old Town!! We stayed next door to it so we could walk over on a night for a drink. Will definately be stopping there again or looking at renting a townhouse on Regal Oaks. Absolutely love the car parades on Fri/Sat night, which is very well policed & imho have never felt unsafe even the the place get very busy.

When was this. Ive been going to Old Town since 2000 and never seen a dungeon or a London bus. There was a diner in 2000/2001, a bit like a 50s type theme, but the owners were American. Only shop owned by a Brit was the Brit Shop as far as I know.
Its also not dirty, its not Disney by any means, but its not dirty
Ive been to DTD on a Friday night when the place stunk of cigars, people walking with beer bottles and pools of vomit on the floor. Couldnt get out of there fast enough to go back to Old Town.
As for run down, some people just dont realise its meant to resemble a cracker town from the early 1900s. Those rusty roofs are meant to look like that.
Very unsavoury characters!!!......that must have been myself , Suzie and our girls....................and the THOUSANDS of people that go there each week for the cruise nites, including the locals that own those fantastic cars and bikes.

we all love old town and love skycoaster(dh bottled it, will never let him live it down), my DD and myself did this two year ago, the scariest bit we thought was when we were being hoisted up 300ft into the air, everything getting smaller and smaller, when the guys shouted 321 fly DD couldn't find the ripcord thing to pull, found it then pulled , WOW absolutley amazing biggest best thrill of my life, can't wait to do it again...
As for the rest of old town we love it, my DS's love the old car cruise, they have bands playing, we plan to go there friday night after taking it easy during the day, will have a game of "play in the dark" mini golf first...

For many year have always enjoyed an afternoon and evening at Old Town - but after this year I wouldn't bother again. We went on a Sunday afternoon and it was heaving - large groups, that I assume were local, staggering around with drinks in their hands screaming and arguing. Most of the family groups were up by the old coke shop, it felt very frightening trying to walk up towards the 192 pushing through the crowd. There were plenty of police around but the atmosphere was not what we had experienced before.

well sorry to rain on your parade but we have been going twice a year since 1984 and i can assure you that the place was there. it was at the end on the right hand side . i can't for the life of me remember what it was called but it was there when old town first opened. it served cornish pasties, shepherds pies etc, i didn't expect to have to verify my comment with dates it opened and closed so i cannot furnish this piece with them.
it is very unlike any cracker town i have visited, most of them don't have grotty t-shirt shops and seedy looking bars, the people are gentle folk and are genuinely pleased to see tourist and extend great courtesy via their cafe within a drug store type places.

i'm with anna lisa on this one we go every year and only got back last month i agree it was a place we loved to go to one time! but this year it was filthy the toliets that I had the misfortune to go to were quite horrendous, and some real dodgy characters around I felt it had lost its sparkle and the people were falling out of the bars and blind drunk Hated it would only return during daylight hours i felt unsafe!

We usually visit once every trip. We like going at the weekend to see the car show. I always have to visit Checkers too:spin:
We go every time we visit, love the unusual shops, bit of a tradition to go to the corner store to buy a 25cents bottle of pepsi :) Have seen the car show there and enjoyed that too. Not brave enough to go on the sky coaster thingie though, far too scary for me.

anna-lisa, i don't think my husband was actually asking you to verify anything, he was just curious to know where they were as we had not seen them in all the times that we have been to Old Town, he certainly wasn't asking for any sarcastic answers, after all this is an 'information board' where people ask questions!
Instead of going during the evening when the locals and the tourists are having a good time, why not try going during the day when there are just the tourists, they have lots of activities, schools drives and charities going on, just check out their website for details. It also gives news on upcoming new rides.

Its defo worth a visit. The times we have been we have visited it on several times. We find it to have happy atmosphere all the time and there is a fair bit to do!
The go-carts are boss and the 300 feet swing is great. There is also a drag racer that is good fun!

I think you need to take a chill pill annie-lisa. Each to our own, you dont like the place, we do. But looking at the success of Old Town after 18 years it obviously isnt the ghetto you seem to make it out to be.
Kissimmee is a tourist area, and places like Old Town have to change with the needs of its clients or they go under. Some of the changes are good, some not so good, but they are needed to keep people coming back.
One thing you have to remember is that Old Town is where a lot of the locals go for their night out at weekend. It is they who spend money there week in week out, and as a business Old Town will provide for those that pay the wages. If that means opening a new bar then so be it and if it makes someone happy then thats fine by me.
If theres one thing that makes me sad when I visit Orlando, its seeing attractions closed down and boarded up. Theres been quite a few closures over the past few years and one of the reasons as far as I can see is because the attractions never added anything new. Take Splendid China for instance. Only so many people will go back to something like that and even they will stop if nothing new is added, which I feel was the case in that instance.
Just to finish. I dont need Suzie to fight any battles. Ive been at work13 hours today,Dibbing and driving a 30 tonne truck is not a good mix.

"Kissimmee is a tourist area, and places like Old Town have to change with the needs of its clients or they go under."
i think you have hit the nail on the head there, it did start to go downhill with the advent of mass tourism and the influx of people from out of state who service this phenomena. splendid china i suspect went under because it didn't have all day drinking like most of the parks and like cypress gardens was just a beautiful place to be but not a thrill a minute like people want now.
no dibbing and trucking don't mix, nothing and driving mix. i have seen enough r.t.a.'s to realise that.

As others have said, each to their own. I've been there a few times over the years but to be honest I'd rather spend the time wandering around a SuperTarget or Lowes!
It's Ok for an evening visit, but basically it's a bit tourist tacky. Just go and form your own opinion, it doesn't cost you anything to check it out.

It's a cheesy place and not one part of it is truly amazing, but it's 'nice' and well worth a visit.
It's kind of a tradition for us to go there at least once per holiday, if only to see what's changed (and to see if I'll go in the haunted house - not yet!).
It may not have spectacle or big budget presentation, but that's not what it's aiming for :)

I liked it a few years ago but have to say I am not rushing back with the girls anytime soon. LAst time we were there for car show and as others have said I found toilets filthy and the atmosphere wasn't the same. Loads of people with alcohol. I did feel quite uneasy. Two years before we went earlier in the day/ evening and the girls went on the side show type rides as we had gotten wristbands free. We were there for ages and had drinks meal and wander round the shops. Totally different atmosphere and we had a lovely time. Last twice at night I didn't enjoy and we got our car blocked in both times despite being parked somewhere sensible. As others have said each to their own and I think it is one of the places you either love or hate but you need to decide for yourself.

short2005, dont worry friend, water of a ducks back.
I suppose some people dont like change, especially some of those who started going to Florida when it was a place where the more fortunate among us would go for a holiday. But the influx of mass tourism to Florida can only be blamed on one company....Disney.
Walt didnt purchase all the land just for the hell of it, he knew that it would become a vacation metropolis given the right type of parks and the superb location of Central Florida. Given the amount of land he purchased it was quite obvious the Walt Disney company were not going to stop with just one park either, they learned from the mistakes of California. Walt Disney wanted tourists, and he wanted them to come in their millions. If he were alive today, he certainly wouldnt be complaining thats for sure.
Once those wheels where in motion it wouldnt be long before others would jump on the bandwagon, thats the way of the world and always will be.
With the good economies of both the US and the UK in the last decade it was quite obvious that those of us [and that includes myself] who could normally only dream of a Florida holiday were finding that those dreams were turning into a reality, something that some of those who had held the bragging rights for many years have found hard to accept. I must add that this doesnt apply to the majority, but obviously applies to some.
As for people from "out of State" adding to the tourism problem some find so hard to accept, well tough , they are for the most US citizens and have more right to be there than we do from the UK or any other country for that matter.
Its a bit the same with cruises, its not that long ago that people who went on cruise holidays were for the most middle class citizens, now cruise holidays are within the reach, price wise, of a lot more people. Earth has become a small world, especially in the past 100 years or so, and is getting smaller by the day. Some people just need to learn to live with it.
Ahhh....corn dogs:grin:. , and hey dont forget the funnel cakes. Love mine with a sprinkling of cinnamon.
Cant be doing with anything "British" when on holiday in the US, give me Cracker Barrell/Bob Evans and some good 'ole fried chicken and gravy anyday.
Get me to the speedway track or the local baseball and live like an American even if its for just one evening;)

There is a good magic shop and the guys will show you all sorts of tricks. It may be a bit tacky but if you don't take it too seriously its good.

People come on the Dibb to talk about Disney and Florida and are not looking for people picking fights over nothing

Ive read many of annie-lisa's posts over the months [ some great money saving tips] and she is no doubt an experienced Florida go'er with lots of good advice to offer on the Dibb.
I feel her main problem with Old Town is the drinking of alcohol and drunkeness. I understand that she is in no hurry to return to IOA for the same reason.
What I find a bit "pots and kettles" is the open admission on the Dibb of "Picking her way carefully down the stairs" out of the Japanese Yakitori restaurant in Epcot, "post haste of a strong coffee stand", after drinking the potent Japanese beer.
I too have a thing about drunkeness because alcohol abuse was one of the main things that wrecked my first marriage, and has also contributed to my 2 DDs no longer wanting to visit their mother at a weekend, which is quite a sad, but understandable situation. I think thats one reason Im virtually teetotal. But I dont make a song and dance about it and I dont advise others not to go somewhere just because its there.
I can honestly say I have never seen drunkeness as such in any park or attaction, with the exception of DTD Easter 2006. Thats what I love about our Florida holidays.
I wouldnt like to see it in any park TBH, but Old Town is not just amusements, its where folk, especially locals go for a night out. I would describe it as a State Fair atmosphere in many ways.
To be fair, theres probably more drunkeness in Downtown Disney/Pleasure Island and City Walk than there is at Old Town but nobody mentions that on here.

Stayed next door & wouldnt hesitate to do so again. As alot of people come to see the car shows are driving, there probably isnt that many drunks around & it has always been well policed. We find it very enjoyable, something abit different from the 'nicey nicey' of Disney (although i love that too!) & i love having a mooch around the unusual 'nick, nacky' shops. We have always found the locals very pleasant, friendly & very helpful when asked for information. I suppose its each to their own & wouldnt life be boring if we all agreed on everything!!

A couple of years ago we stayed at the (very nice and well reviewed) Comfort Suites whish are right next door to Old Town. Despite being "Florida veterans" we had never visited so we gave it a try. Sure it isn't Disney but we both (a couple in their 50s) loved the atmosphere and friendliness of the locals. There are bars but as has been said we have witnessed more drunkenness at DTD and City Walk than here.
There are some fun souvenir shops and a couple of fast food places (a particularly nice hot dog comes to mind). The car and bike nights were fun and we can honestly say we did not feel it was unsafe or dirty at all.
Come on folks, try something that isnt the Disney norm (though we like that too!!)
We must be really brave because we like to go to downtown Orlando too:omg:
Contrary to belief it is not full of addicts and beggars but is a thriving commercial area with a fabulous hotel (Grand Bohemian) which does a fab jazz brunch, lots of trendy eateries and the best History center we have ever visited.:thumbs-up

I would love Church St Station to open up back to its glory again.
Never got the chance to go there, but I bet it was buzzing in its heyday.
I believe theres a park thats good too, cant remember what its called though.

It was absolutely fantastic - one of the best nights I had in Florida at Rosie O'Gradys & the Cheyenne Saloon. Sadly missed.
Although I heard it is making a comeback. I can't see it ever being like it used to be though. Shame.
