View Full Version : Avoiding the queues?

We are going back to Disney on 10th August (can't wait!!!) As usual we are going to try and cram in as much as possible. I have not been during the school holidays before and would like to avoid the queues where possible as travelling with two young children. Is it best to get to the parks as they open? We are staying at Coronado Springs so will benefit from EMH however from reading some reports it seems best to avoid these days. Any tips????

Get in early, you will have best chance of beating q's. You can then come out of park later during day when busy.

You can also go back in later in evening for fireworks etc after you have had a rest.

As above - get in early and do the main attractions. Use Fastpass and get out again lunchtime-ish.

If doing Universal stay on-site for (at least) a night for FOTL.

Getthere for rope drop and you will get a lot done. We have decided not to use AM EMH simply due to fact it would mean getting to parks prior to 8am to take advantage. Just feel that our 2 boys aged 8 & 12 will benefit far more with the extra hours sleep

Thank you for your reply, I have never even attempted to make a rope drop before, but that is because I benefit from the extra hours sleep!!! Will do better this year!!!!!!

My top crowd avoidance tips:

early starts
using Fastpass
ride during parades, fireworks and mealtimes
stay in the park if it rains, lines will be shorter after a shower
have a rough idea of where the main attractions are within the park so you can get to them quickly
make the most of evening EMH, these tend to be quieter than mornings
avoid the South American tour groups

Get there as early as possible, plan what rides you want to do & head straight for them first.

Pointers to help make rope drop

Use daughter as alarm clock. Get up when she wakes up!
Have breakfast in your room (make use of fridge)
Have hair cut short before the trip this could save you up to hour in the morning.
Get a tan so you don't need to put much make up on. Another hour saved. Put lippy on in car. Obviously not when driving. Get someone else to drive!
Go with friends who are early birds and are always ready on time.

We went to Universal this year in June and I was a bit worried how we'd get on without the express passes. But we were working to a budget, so made an effort (not easy when we are NOT morning people;)) to be there before opening.

We arrived at the turnstyles at 8.45am, headed for Hulk, then Spiderman, then Dueling Dragons at IOA before going on the rest we wanted to do, it worked brilliantly, done by 11.30am!

Same for Universal, did Simpsons, MIB, Disaster and Mummy by 11am, by then the lines were up to an hour.
We been on all the big rides with less then a 5 min wait, usually just walked straight on.

So was definately worth the sacrifice :thumbs-up

We plan to take advantage of the EMH's in the mornings spend 2 hours doing rides then headding off to breakfast either in the park or not far away. the rest of the day we plan to chill out away from the parks maybe do shopping or relax by the pool in resort, then hit the parks again of an evening.

I find it best to avoid the parks with EMH - we always go for rope drop but on the days we went in to parks for EMH we found them a lot busier than the days we went that were not EMH (this was in the past 2 weeks)

Thanks for your comments. I think I will need to take an alarm clock as my daughter is usually awake after me! I think it is a great idea about breakfast in the room, whoever thought of that deserves a pat on the back!!!!!! I never wear make up on holiday anyway so I'll go with that one, can't see me having my hair cut but I have invested in a clip to put it up. I only wish I could find some friends who are early birds and are ready on time:d: Usually they are worse than me, I will send them your response as it will prove useful to them too. Thanks;)

Definintely arrive 30mins prior to opening! This will save you so much time - we can get about 7 rides done in Magic Kingdom in the first 2 hours! Work out a route round the park, and make good use of fastpasses :)

Avoid all of the EMH's - we find that these always make the park soooo much busier than the days without - the mornings are claustrophobic and the evening queues are terrible - we went off season and went to Epcot EMH pm and the queues for Soarin and Test Track were still about 90 minutes after 11.30pm!! If you arrive 30mins before rope drop on a non-emh day you can practically walk on both of these if you hurry straight there! :)

Consider going to parks the day after EMH. They may be quieter.

Get up EARLY, get to the parks EARLY and by doing this you get to head back to the hotel EARLY and chill for a bit before heading out to do it all over again that night :D

We got a lot of things done by getting there for rope drop. Yes sometimes it was a struggle but if we had a tired morning we didnt do a park that day and went at night instead :spin:

I miss being that busy

Thank you, I am getting the feeling Early is the key, not my usual style as I am not that quick to get going in the morning...this year will be different!

If you have a look at this thread and click the first link it will tell you the best days to visit the different parks.

EMH is Extra Magic Hours when the park either opens or closes earlier/later for guest staying in a Disney property. Rope drop is when the park opens and everyone charges in (although not made one myself yet) this is my first time going in August when it is busier so I am determined to make the rope drop(s) this year, even if I am still half asleep. However I am travelling with the Smith family and they are not very organised first thing in the morning!
