You can buy antibiotic cream in wal-greens but I don't think you can buy antibiotic tablets.

I don't think you can you need a prescription, certainly not for kids anyhow.

I had a throat infection really bad on my second day there and needed antibiotics so I was told then in Walgreens that they are prescription only. Went to the medical centre on I-Drive where a consultation cost $110 but I got a prescription for 16 antibiotic tablets which cost over $130 :erm:- incredible! I was glad the insurance covered it - it really made me think that we are quite lucky!

Annoyingly, you can't buy antibiotics off-prescription in the US; I've tried. Try the internet if you need to stock up.

:wavey:not sure if its any help but our son is prone to infections and our dr does a prescription for antibiotics in liquid form i get it dispensed for him at the pharmacy here but they don't add the water, if he needs them when we are on hol the directons are on the bottle to make it up with water for when we are there, this way we never get caught out and almost always end up using them, i wouldnt leave the country without it:wavey:

yes, i have kind gp who will give us a course of antibiotics to take with us, can you really buy them on the internet, i would hate to go with an unknown antibiotic in case i went into severe anyphylactic shock, not a pretty and very life threatening state:omg: and it does happen with oral as well as i.v. antibiotics.

Our son is prone to infection and we do the same as Sharon we take it with us and make it up if we need it.If you think you will need antibiotics in Florida then as already said see your doctor and ask if he will give you a prescription before you go.

You have to see one of their doctor's to get a prescription, but they are normally pretty good. We are lucky our own GP gives us extra antibiotics for our child to cover for emergency situations should they arise.

they may have given them in the past but GP's are under increasing pressure to cut there antibiotics prescribing due to increased resistance when theyre really needed, I think they should only be given when clinically needed........there are so many new bugs that are resisitant to antibiotcs because of overuse and there are no new antibiotics strong enough.........so sorry if I offend anyone one they shouldnt be talked about like paracetamol that can be just taken willy nilly.................
AND DEFINATLY DONT BUY OFF THE INTERNET.YOU DONT REALLY KNOW WHAT YOUR BUYING AND COULD END UP WORSE OFF

I could have done with anibiotics last Xmas ,had to wait until the cruise hit Cancun to be able to get them ,but I belive if you go to a doctors office in Florida it costs a whole lot less than going to the walkin facility, found the Pharmacist in Walgreens very helpful he gave ne decongestants where he had to record my passport no on to his system to alert them if I kept trying to buy them, they helped a little.Had insurance didnt want the hassle of a claim

We generally take a dry antibiotic with us so if its needed its just a matter of making it up.

A much cheaper option than going to a Medical Center which can cost a bomb.

I can be prone to ear infections and have had to get drops and anti biotics when in Fiji (cost about £20 all told)

Have tried to get my doctor to give me a 'just in case' prescription but he has refused, but he did offer to let me buy a private prescription which I could take to the chemist who would charge me the proper price for the tablets. :confused2

They innoculate you for free to avoid an ongoing problem I don't understand why the Dr wouldn't let me have anti biotics.

I have to remember to wear my ear plugs when I swim in a pool.

:wavey:a dry antibiotic is when you get your prescription for liquid medicine dispensed at the chemist ask them not to make it up, it is just powder in the bottle so that you can take it with you and if you need it on holiday the directions are on the bottle for how much water to add to make it up ready to use. If its for an adult though you could just ask the dr for capsules or tablets. Our dr gives the dry antibiotics to us because or son is on them every month anyway so she knows he will more than likely need them:wavey:

We found Wallgreens really could, however last year we had to go to the doctors with my daughter who became really poorly, we ended up at Celebration Hospital which cost $170 which we paid there. Two months later at home in the uk we received a doctors bill for another £400 for the doctors bill. Insurance has covered it.

So please beware of that, if you have to attend a hospital the bill you are paying for does not include any doctors fees, they are dealt with sep.

I know a few friends who manage to get powder anit biotics which they make up if they need it from there docs in the uk.

Hope this helps a little.

Nurse here - never ever ever take antibiotics without consulting a doctor. They are way over used and as another poster observed, that is partly the reason for treatment resistant infections.
Antibiotics are only needed it it is a bacterial infection, they are of no use whatsoever for viruses.

I sometimes refuse to take antibiotics as the treatment for one infection can actually CAUSE another infection as your resistance is low. EG. I had a severe throat infection, given antibiotics, ended course got an ear infection etc. You have to stop and let nature cure at some point - and it usually does.
Also antibiotics cause fungal infections - thrush being the most common one.

I for one don't want to NEED antibiotics one day only to find that nothing works because I've taken too many beforehand.

:wavey:I agree with sue, i didnt even know that you could buy antibiotics without seeing a dr! I wouldnt give mark anything without discussing it with our dr, we only take the antibiotics with us for mark's recurrent ear infections due to a long term perforated ear drum
and we know the signs when he has an ear infection but if he was ill with anything else we would see a dr, i always do take these antibiotics with us though because as i said before he gets thease infections on a monthly basis so find it extremely useful to have them with me until we get home and see our own dr again:d:

I would go prepared and take some with you. My daughter had an ear infection out in the Keys a couple of years ago. It cost us almost $300 for the consultation, antibiotics and ear drops. I know insurance covers it but you still have to pay out first.
Still had to visit our GP when we got home as it didn't clear up!
