I know the new iPhone uses HSDPA fast 3G connections and the contract allows for unlimited broadband. Can you connect it to a laptop via bluetooth and use the HSDPA modem for broadband on the laptop?

I currently use a Vodafone HSDPA USB modem that allows 3Gigs per month download. But the contract is up on that now and I was thinking about an iPhone to replace it.

It would be good to have the browser and email on the phone, but sometimes I would need a connection on the laptop too.

Hiya, I've no idea myself but asked my DS for you as thought he may have some answers. This was his reply.

Yep that's one i know about. It's technically possible, but O2 / AT&T in America specifically prohibit it, and Apple don't allow it on the device. There's 2 work arounds:

If this person "jailbreaks" the iPhone, I think there's a way to do it, but that involves voiding the guarentee with Apple/O2 and they won't do anything if it breaks.

Better solution: I've been told of people just putting their iPhone sim card into another 3G datacard, maybe in the current vodafone one this person has got, I've never personally seen one of the 3G USB modems before, but doing this increases the chances that you'll go over the "fair usage limit" even though it's unlimited, so be careful.

Not sure if that helps or not and as said I've no idea what he's talking about!
