Buying a DSLR in the USA

Hi

I'm hoping to get a new camera in America when we go soon....I'm after a canon 40d, probably body only unless the kit is good value...got a 350d so the lenses will be compatible. Anyone know of good places to buy. I'm hoping Costco will have them, they do online at a great price but doesn't mention in store but would be able to return to costco in uk if there were problems.

Also, anyone know if there are any issues regarding uk/usa compatability? I can't imagine there will be but i'm not 100% sure.

My husband bought a Sony Alpha 100 last year and had no problems with compatability.

We always buy our camera equipment from Circuit City or Best Buy when in orlando and B&H when in New York,

Hi there,

I got an amazing deal on an olympus DSLR with a twin lense pack while in orlando in 2007. Watch out because I think the d40's are called rebil xt's in the USA (I may be confusing this with another so best to check!) so stand out like a thumb if you are stopped by customs. Amazon.com is a good place, just get it delivered to your hotel. I did this with a Pocket PC.

If you do buy at Costco, yes you should be covered here in the UK. We bought DD something from Costco in the US, it broke, we made sure we kept our receipt, took it back to Costco here got a exchange no problem.
But the other thing to think about is Canon DSLR bodies are not covered under Canon's International guarantee, only the lenses.

Been checking the websites for those stores, thanks for that, they are all a fair bit cheaper over there.

xrayman, it's the 400d/450d that's the rebel over there, the 40d seems to be under the same name as here, thank goodness!!!

Michelle, I didn't realise that the international warranty doesn't cover bodies, how annoying, think i better look into it a bit more, I have family there so may talk to them to see if they'd be able to buy it for me, if you get me.

If you get things delivered to your hotel do they need to be signed for or anything? is delivery quick?

Try colonial photo and hobby in real downtown orlando, very helpful. DH bought some big lens there and saved quite a bit. Think they also have a website so try googling it. Also post office just over the road, so we sent the boxes etc back home so didn't have the packaging in case - oops hope there are no C&E spies on here!!

Michelle is correct, only Canon lenses are covered by international warranty, not bodies.

When I bought my 350D (Digital Rebel version) I took out an extended 3 year 'Mack' international warranty via B&H PhotoVideo (cost about $65 I think). I highly recommend them by the way, and they have a UK freephone number to place your order before you go. They won't deliver to hotel addresses though, I had to ship to a Florida resident who kindly dropped it into the hotel for me.

I hadn't come across them before, might give them a try this holiday - thanks for the info. They seem about 6% cheaper than Ritz but about 10% dearer than mail-order from B&H, so a nice middle-ground if you want to buy in person.
