View Full Version : Filming the rides
Dibbers,
Was any of you surprised at the way Universal/Disney are really clamping down on the use of a video camera while on the attractions.
I was lucky and filmed most things, but one guy got caught on Pirates of the Caribbean - they stopped the ride and he got a right telling off!
Anyone else had the same problem!
Cheers
Mark
What other rides were they stopping videotaping on Mark? I've never really had any problems before although there are a few rides like Back to the Future where it's always been discouraged. I've filmed Pirates several times without any hassles. Every time I've been on that ride there have been people videotaping it and there's never been a problem.
Jaws, Jurassic Park, Men in black, was some of the main ones that they dont stand for video taping.
Jaws really surprised me on that one. It was mainly Universal Studios that was strict on the taping.

I filmed most of Jurassic Park except for the bits inside the building.
I also filmed the whole of Jaws. The man at the beginning did say to everyone no video taping allowed but i really wanted it on vid! We were on the 2nd row so would have seen it but didn't do any thing about it.
This was in October so maybe they have got more strict ?!?
Man, i tried to record Jaws and the lady driving the boat wouldnt have any of it. Its a shame really cause its a risk we take, its not there camera and with Jaws for example i could see no reason at all why recording should be banned.
It was mainly universal that was strict. In the end i hardly recorded anything as i didnt want rides or shows stopped and ruin over peoples days just becuase i wanted it on tape.
I guess it depends on who ya have on the day and what sort of mood they are in eh!

Maybe they don't like you recording it because of all the 'mystery' surrounding it - our driver told us to 'keep it quiet' when we landed, 'cos it wouldn't do the tourist business any good...... Digital video recorders with screens do make it much easier to record stuff though - not as obvious as holding a camera to your face all the time......

Doesn't this have anything to do with copyrights etc??? You cannot tape at cineams, theatres & the like so I assume it applies at WDW as well!

We videoed Jaws without any trouble, mind you that was last may!, weve also got ET, winnie the pooh and a few others.
Maybe someone can send me the VT on the jaws ride, so i can edit it into my holiday DVD hahaa.

Universal are definitely more strict. I was told off when taping Cat in the Hat. I hadn't noticed any signs saying that I couldn't film. But then 'the voice of God' appeared, and told me to put it away...

That HAS to be the most annoying thing of all.
Imagine the scene yeah. Your in the que waiting for the rides, you then look at the sign - it says nothing at all about video taping, but DOES have a warning about flash photography. So you think to yourself great, i aint taking pics, just filming, NO FLASH, so everything will be fine.
I dont even open the LCD screen cause it makes a light, so im being as good as gold. Then the voice from the gods "Can the man in the back row please put his video camera away"
They have to state more clearly if you can film on a ride or not. I want to capture everything when i go somewhere like that, cause trying to explain rides to people that havent been there is a nightmare.
IF YOUR READING THIS UNIVERSAL - SORT YOUR RULES OUT! and we can follow them. GGrrr!

Exactly. I border on paranoid when filming, not wanting to annoy others etc., as I have a low irritation threshold myself. So when you try to do all the right things and then still get told off...
Ian
I think we should let Universal know of our concerns LOL. Maybe they will send us video tape footage of the rides we missed out on! aha

We nearly lost ALL our camera kit when taking some piccies of #3 son, his school teddy bear and the Statue of Liberty in Newark airport immigration area!!!! No signs, no nothing - the 6' statue was too good to miss, along with the HUGE stars and stripes hanging on the wall (where in the UK do you see the Union Flag being presented so proudly???) Please be careful out there!!

I had my video camera confiscated in Alien Encounter last year at MK but I managed to video the other rides we went on. I did not bother this year as I always felt I was experiencing Florida through a viewfinder in the past but I did notice the increase in the bans on video and still cameras both at Disney and Universal

WE managed to video Winnie the Pooh, had to have our mates Tigger and Eeyore on film - all part of the holiday video. Watched it the other Sunday afternoon to try and get the rest of the family back into Disney mode - but not much success.

Was that Jaws?
He/she was maybe making a joke about Amity Island - dont tell the tourists we have a shark etc. ;)

Weird, we've videoed Tower Of Terror (tricky :D ) , Buzz Lightyear, Winnie The Pooh in Disney, never had any problems.
The Jaws thing is maybe because they don't want your cameras to get wet?

I'm gonna get Nic to try this in December, I love TOT - he hates it.
lol - I just remembered seeing a guy on Popeyes Bilge ride - I was looking down from the ship where you can squirt them with water.
He has a very small and expensive camcorder in his hand !!!!!!!
I doubt it survived that ride without a thorough soaking
I think it must have been his first water ride - poor soul :(

Tell Nic to be careful.. from a Cast Member....
Believe me, it can sometimes be very entertaining [video monitor room]. Especially after we tell them to hold on to all loose belongings, and we watch the sunglasses come right out from their shirt pocket…or the glasses from their shirt collar. The best is when we say, "No videotaping or photography...then they video tape the ride, and when they stop at the top and the doors are open they are taping away. Then the elevator drops and the eyepiece to the camera pokes their eye out. That's always enjoyable. That's why I usually say, "And no videotaping of flash photography please because you will poke your eyes out and it makes a horrible mess in the elevator. Thanks!"

we have seen people getrting a telling off for trying to tape in T23D at US. It was funny cos the staff were saying as the Terminators are top secret they cannot be filmed due to a possible press leakage. They were good humoured about it.

Tried to do TOT last year but the battery ran out just after the ghosts appeared would you believe? Of course I didn't know it had run out so I am sitting there with a "dud" camcorder.
When we were out there this May our eldest son decided to start filming in Pirates of the Caribbean without us knowing!! He was sitting behind us with our other son. Not long before you come to the drop, the boat stopped and this voice said about filming not being allowed etc. We always go on this ride and I don`t remember hearing this ever said before, so I`m guessing it was for our son`s beneift!! He did stop and then started filming again (without us knowing) after the drop. They obviously didn`t notice the second time, thank goodness.

I taped a lot of the rides at Disney (non at Universal, as they were really strict about this and I didn't want to risk gettig caught). Even though Disney never said anything about NOT filming, I always felt a little guilty about doing it. So I didn't use the view-finder - just kept the camera on my lap and pointed it in the general direction of the focus of the ride. Seemed to work OK when we watched it back.
