UNIVERSAL ORLANDO Officially Unwrap the Revenge of the Mummy on 21 May 2004

ORLANDO, FLORIDA - Universal Orlando officials announced today a May 21 grand opening date for the highly anticipated Revenge of the Mummy - The Ride, marking the next evolution in themed attractions and the third new attraction to open within the past year at Universal Studios Florida.

Revenge of the Mummy - The Ride blends a powerful storyline with an unparalleled combination of Hollywood special effects all wrapped around the visceral thrills of an indoor roller coaster.

The new attraction is so different from anything Universal has ever done that its creators believe it represents a whole new category of theme park attraction, which they call the world's first psychological thrill ride.

From the moment riders embark on their journey, they encounter both physical and psychological fears - fear of the dark, fear of bugs, fear of fire, fear of falling, fear of being out of control, and more.

Along the way, riders also experience a mind blowing combination of sight and sound special effects including pyrotechnics, projected CGI animation, advanced robotic figures, and illusions designed to assault all of the senses.

Revenge of the Mummy - The Ride is the third new attraction to open within about a year at Universal Studios Florida. Shrek 4-D opened in summer 2003 and Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast opened in spring 2003. Revenge of the Mummy, now in pre-opening technical rehearsals, is on schedule for its May opening.

"We set out to change the face of Universal Studios with new experiences that are relevant and thrilling to today's audiences," said Bob Gault, president of Universal Orlando, the destination that includes the Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure theme parks. "The result is a trio of compelling, new attractions that give our guests that maximum entertainment experience they expect from our theme parks."

Each new attraction offers a unique guest experience. Shrek 4-D, with new animation by DreamWorks Pictures, represents the next generation of 3-D attractions, blending spectacular visuals with multiple special effects and surprises. Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast immerses guests in an adventure that stars the famous boy genius and the largest collection of Nickelodeon characters ever assembled for a theme park attraction - including the ever-popular SpongeBob SquarePants.

And, the innovation behind Revenge of the Mummy - The Ride, is now Universal's latest entry in the mega-attraction category.

Based on the phenomenally popular "Mummy" films starring Brendan Fraser, Revenge of the Mummy - The Ride is one of the most technologically advanced and one of the most expensive thrill rides in history. The action all takes place inside one of the world's largest sound stages, where guests are swept into an ominous underworld of ancient Egypt awash in deadly curses, powerful forces of nature, and vengeful creatures intent on wreaking havoc.

"New experiences are always great for growth and tourism - and since adding the Shrek and Nickelodeon attractions, we have seen sustained growth in our attendance," said Gault. "Clearly, our new attractions are good news for our guests and good news for tourism," Gault added. "This year started strong and we're optimistic that the late May opening of Revenge of the Mummy - The Ride will make for an extraordinary summer season."

Revenge of the Mummy - The Ride will also open at Universal Studios Hollywood in June of 2004.

Universal Orlando Resort (www.universalorlando.com) includes two dramatically distinct and adjacent theme parks, the Universal Studios Florida motion picture and television theme park and Islands of Adventure, Orlando's next generation theme park. Universal Orlando also includes CityWalk, a 30-acre dining, shopping, club, and live-entertainment venue, as well as premier on-site Loews hotels and world-class film and television production facilities.

That is the official opening, I'm sure they will be soft running right up to the actual open date. Just ask at guest services if they are running it that day.

I did this last week, after noticing people answering questions at the ride early morning and phrasing my question well enough that I got a definite hint it would be opening (if you just ask if it's opening that day, you get told it doesn't open until May, so I had to ask if there would be a technical rehearsal that day, but I think it depends on who is working as some are more helpful that others)- there were no actual notices anywhere. From what I've read (and from when I rode it), it seems that it opens around lunchtime if it's going to open at all - I assume that might be because they won't have huge queues that way, we only had to wait 35mins.

Definitely worth doing!! :)

Arghhhhhhh..........UPDATE

Looks like I will miss this ride after all!

"Screamscape (online coaster website that is very reliable) has heard that Revenge of the Mummy has closed down, ending the Technical Rehearsal, to finish installing all of the final effects. It is likely that it will not reopen again until the May 21st Grand Opening.

They will be long, but if you get there early and get your express pass as soon as you get to the ride, you'll get on it OK.

We went to US and IOA last July and the parks were very busy, so I suggest you get there early or obtain express passes.

We want to do these two parks in October when we return with friends (there first time) so we have booked into a Universal resort for 2 nights giving us front of the line access for all rides.

Latest Update - sounds like they might be bringing it forward slightly....still too late for me though :-(

2004 - Revenge of The Mummy - (4/23/04) While the Mummy has closed down again to finish up all the effects, we’ve heard that it could open again as early as May 14th if all goes well. The park is also planning a Passholder nighttime preview event on May 21st, along with Press Events from May 19-21st as well.

Just got back from Florida on Monday. Visited Universal on the 18th and was told that 'The Mummy Returns' was closed again (and would be right up until the 21st May opening) to complete the ride.

Not getting to ride was probably the only disappointment in an otherwise fantastic holiday!! :(

This would be most disappointing, so I have booked a night at the Portofino Bay for our last full day in Orlando (May 21st) just so I can get to go on this ride.
