Just curious, we're DVC owners and very happy with that, our neighbours got back from WDW last week and had a good time so have bought a villa
I've always had a little pipe dream of one day buying a villa out there, but DH has always said that if we had that much disposable income that he'd want to just buy more DVC points as he loves the luxury of staying in a hotel, and all the amenities that come with it.
So just for a fun thread, if you had a large amount of cash come your way, would you plump for a villa or lots of DVC points
(or similar)?

That's a difficult one. At the moment with three children we by far prefer having a villa with our own pool and enough bedrooms for the children to each have their own BUT... I can see that in a few years when we are just a twosome that the luxury of a hotel will be beckoning so I think I will sit on the fence on this one LOL

I think I'd want the villa. Just imagine being able to go from one home to the next, having all your homely comforts with you and even being able to gain income from it when you're not using it.
Have to seen the tv programme "Location Location Location" I love it, some of the properties abroad are so reasonable and right near the sea - heaven:wink
Mind you on saying that at least with the hotels you can try different ones hmmmm, now I'm not so sure LOL

We discussed this recently and decided that we would go for the villa and then use florida residents rates for park passes and on site stays for the odd day or two each visit.
A villa too for me! but you can always sell it later on in life to go DVC when you are on your own with no children!
I would love a disney villa! do they do those!!

We love stopping in a villa, and would love one day to buy one - trying to get MIL & FIL to buy one, in fact might have a couple of days this holiday looking around at the developments. Never stopped in a hotel in florida I must admit but just love the luxury of the villas and all the home comforts and the space!

I'd love one of those beautiful log cabins they have in Georgia.
..villa, I reckon, but near Sarasota... you can always get cheap accommodation in Kissimmee or Orlando for a couple of days Disney fix, but the property values are higher near the Gulf, and it feels more like 'real' America to me than the 'communities' we've stayed on.. all lovely for a couple of weeks, but not for months... the 'estates' we saw inland of the Sarasota Keys felt like real people lived there, and liked so doing! (Love to own a villa on the beach, but haven't got the $5-6MILLION needed!:D)
...hey, but if someone offered me a few hundred DVC points, I wouldn't cry!;)

When we win the lottery (which won't be any time soon as we never buy a ticket :D ) we'll buy a villa near Disney and rent it out when we're not using it. When we are old and crumbly, we'll live in it for part of the year and lend it to relatives for the rest of the time.
I prefer the privacy of a villa - I don't like the idea of maid service in hotel rooms. On the very few occasions I've stayed in a hotel more than one night, the idea of someone else in my room looking at my stuff really creeped me out. :confused2
I guess I could try aversion therapy, though, if anyone was to accidentally find themselves in possession of more free DVC points than they could use!!
LOL edie! Hey... when you rent out your villa, you'll have to hide all your smalls in the secret locker inside the wardrobe!;) - villa owners, what do you put in there? I am so frustrated by a locked door!:D Come on, spill the beans,...what's in the secret cupboard?

Well it'd be DVC points for me! We just LOVE staying on-site, we really felt the magic far more when we were there recently, rather than in the villa.
We also love the hotel amenities.

I'm in the process of buying DVC at OKW at present.
If you simply want a great place to stay with little or no aggro, IMHO it would be DVC.
If you want an investment with the prospect of capital growth, and don't mind the aggro of maintaining or letting a property long distance than IMHO the villa wins.
It also boils down to your prospect of regular usage - if you would/could use repeatedly throughout the year then it is a villa; if you are limited to 2 or 3 weeks a year or every other year, then DVC looks attractive.
Personally if I had a large windfall I would probably vote for DVC points and use the remaining cash closer to home. Either option is a nice though though :)
We do both!!!
We bought the villa because we've got 3 children and hotel stays aren't really that practical but we have added on extra days to our holidays to The Poly, New York and this year Sarasota (Mind you the Sarasota one is proving to be VERY difficult to get accomodation - trying to get a 3 bed condo for a mid-week stay  )
As for the owners closets - OK I'll spill the beans....
Kids summer clothes to save lugging them back and forth
Christmas Tree & Decorations
Paint & DIY stuff
Some boxes for the stuff we've bought
Spare toaster & kettle
Spare bedding
Shampoo etc etc
And lots of misc crud that came with the house but we're still wondering what to do with!!
Can't speak for other owners though!!

:D
ps. If anyone is thinking of buying at the moment - I'd put it on hold until the market slows down - the prices have shot up in price so much and resales are selling the moment they hit the market. I also believe that most of the new builds have a considerable wait for them to be ready and they too are very very expensive. I read on the Home Owner forums that one builder put their prices up by $30K overnight on some roperties :confused2  :(

I think I would go for the villa for the rental income and when out there splurge on a few nights at The Grand Floridian and The Portofino hotel when at the parks!!!

Ahhhh the villas owners closet.............
That's where we put the people who want cheap rates :O)
(joke before anyone gets upset with me)
They are basicly a clothes store for the owners..... we keep most things over there so we don't have to carry it in the suitcase. I'd love to create an feeling of mystery for you but it's really boring I'm affraid. I t also allows us to bring more goodies home :O)
