DH is a mad motorsport fanatic, so I wondered whether it was worth a trip to the speedway? Anyone been? Are there certain race dates?Do you need to book?

I'm a big Nascar fan and have done the ride along twice (163mph....3 laps) but not at WDW. I went to the real deal and rode at Daytona International Speedway. If you are planning a trip over to the beach I highly recommend this track over the Disney track anyday!!!

For more information go to 1800 Be Petty (http://www.1800bepetty.com) for information on both tracks. It's expensive but certainly an experience he'll never forget!!!!

I did the WDW speedway ride along in 2000.Only drawback with the "Mickyard" as it is known,is that it is only a 1 mile oval so the ride is over very quickly.

Hopefully I have timed my Holiday for next April to coincide with the Richard Petty Driving Experience being at Daytona.

WDW speedway only has a couple of race events each year, one of those being an Indy Light race event.

Check out the Richard Petty Driving Experience www.1800bepetty.com
Daytona Speedway is also a great half day visit even when there is no racing.Have a look at www.daytonausa.com
The track tour is superb.

We are Stockcar racing fans here in the UK and use this site to find the tracks and schedules in Florida. www.chasinracin.com

We always make time to see at least one race event when we are there.

I must add though, that US stock car racing on the short ovals is not like the full contact style of racing we have here, more like the National Hot Rods we have here, but much bigger cars and bigger engines.
It is still very spectacular though.

Nearest track to Orlando is Orlando Speedworld. There is also a good track at New Smyrna near Daytona.[half mile asphalt]
Orlando races every Friday and New Smyrna on Saturday.
There is also a good track at Tampa called East Bay.This is a Clay track[third of a mile] and if the Sprint Cars are on,they are mindblowing to say the least.

wow-lots of info there.thanks!!
I'm thinking it may be better to visit the Daytona speedway, we have a 3 1/2 year old an even though he loves cars and loud noise doesn't bother him, most races don't seem to start until 7.30/8.00pm and I think he'd be way too tired and hate it. Do any of the tracks have any events that happen in the afternoon?

No, all of the tracks are evening races. I do suggest if you go to New Smyrna you buy the plugs for the little ones ears. The stands sit very close to the track and the pit area is closer than usual and it is very loud. The Orlando Speedway isn't as bad.

It's great fun! I use to go to the track with my Dad almost every Friday night. Going to New Smyrna on Saturday was a big bonus!!

Tracy,if you cant get to the racing on the Sat night, how about the Saturday Night Cruise at Old Town on the 192.

Cars are on show from the afternoon onwards.
This is not racing but good ole' classic American cars [about 200 of them].
'57 Chevy Belair's,60s muscle cars etc etc.this is a must do for any petrolhead.

Suzie&Stuart- Yes Old town is already in our itenerary for one friday eve and one saturday!!:D My DH has built his own AC Cobra so which evening do you think is best for spotting any fellow Cobra owners??
Thanks

Tracy,Friday Night Cruise is a smaller affair and is for cars built after 1978......or is it 1973..............cant remember offhand.

Sat Night Cruise is a much bigger affair and is for cars built before the above.Sat night is very popular.
I would edge my bets on seeing a Cobra at the Sat Night Cruise.
In fact I am pretty sure there was a Cobra on display last year when we went.
Mind you, even if there isnt,Im pretty sure your DH will think he's gone to heaven when he sees some of the motors on display.

Like you say,if it fits in your itinery,go to both.

By the way,Im extremely envious of your DH now. There are 2 cars in this world that I would dearly love to own.
One is the AC Cobra and the other is a Chevy Corvette.

Can you actually drive the cars or does someone do it for you (as in the photgraph). I am not interested in being a passenger but do love to get behind the wheel... Had a great day at Brands Hatch Rally school recently and also when my boss (stupidly) gave me his keys to his Porsche Boxter and let me take it for a spin in the country (via the M25!!!!!)

Yes you can drive the car yourself...costs a bit more than the ride along experience $379 will get you eight laps....

I quite fancy it but I think Mr Taz would probaly be too scared :D

I don't mind you driving it as long as I don't have to be a passenger ;)

Earthbound,I take it its a WDW Speedway ride-along.

I did the same ride along.I fitted it in with one of our trips to MK.

You go through the kiosks where you pay for the carparks and the track is on your left. You will see a woman sat in a kiosk at the entrance to the track and you drive through a tunnel under the track banking and park up in the track centre.
As you rightly say,you just turn up and go.

Dont forget to buy the photo package before you leave.
I just bought the package with the cardboard folder and got my own frame when we returned home.
Having said that, finding a frame to fit was a bit of a chore so maybe better paying the extra $$$ and getting it framed while you are there.
