Any experiences or advice on this for a different day out?

Sorry, I can't help you there, but Simon Veness does make it sound wonderful in the Brit's Guide.

Fiona, there's an earlier thread here (http://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?s=&forumid=52&threadid=25319) that may help.

Hi we paid a visit to M Dora this year and its lovely. I think its best to go during the day as by the time we arrived at 4.30pm the shops were closing.
There is a big emphasis on antique shops and your all American gift shops. The main street has some nice resturants. You can walk down to the lake which is nice and you might also like to go on the steam railway which runs thru M Dora.
Its not as exciting at the theme parks, but laid back and 'quaint'!
Hope this helps!

Fiona ,Mount dora is superb for a chill out day.

Lots of antique and craft shops, and the train tide is very informative.
The steam train wasnt running when we went [Sunday],but they have a 1920s trolley bus, that runs from Mt Dora to Eustace and back.It goes alongside the lake, you can see all the fantastic lakeside homes, and the "conductor" gives a full history of the railway that you are riding on.This guy had the kids in stitches.

There is also an antique market held every week, but not sure what day.

An English comparison would be somewhere like Wells/Matlock Bath/Howarth [Bronte country].

I think we are trying to fit it in with our plans for next year.

We went last Easter - it was a bit further than we thought so were a bit later than we wanted to be but had a lovely walk around. Friends of ours who live in Florida really rate the Sunday Brunch at the Mount Dora hotel followed by a walk or a boat trip on the lake. Think we may try that next time!
