Planning a trip to both of these. Should we buy tickets in advance? What are the things to look out for? Any info at all would be great.

definitely buy Universal in advance, there are some great deals to be had on Universal tickets, if you look around.
Seaworld, you can save about $5 if you buy online and print out your own tickets, but I wouldn't say it was essential to prebuy.
When are you going dave? If annual power pass blackout dates don't affect you then they look like a great deal for universal as they are the same price as the 7 days for the price of 2

I have the powerplay pass for universal,It can be worth considering 1 member of the the party having a full AP for free parking , discounts etc. The fun pass at sea world is also a good buy and again a member of the party could have a full AP(Kids/50+ are cheaper) here (https://tickets.universalstudios.com/USRG/us_store_secure2.jsp?merchant=UO) and here (http://commerce.4adventure.com/store/dept_tickets.asp?ShopperID=X14B4AD1EA04843F09C9A88 ACE4A6DDB&Token=DEMFKDMFLEFFDDH&dept_id=203)
Hope this helps.

We did not have time to do Universal as we planned to spend most of our first visit in Disney parks, but we did visit Seaworld and were really pleased we did. We bought a one day ticket for the family at the gate and were advised to go to a window just throught the ticket gates, on the left, to receive a free ticket to return for another day within a week. We used this free return ticket and spent another lovely day (more relaxed that the Disney parks, especially in the hectic Christmas-New Year week).

If you are considering doing Discovery Cove you can get admission to Sea World with this for 7 days otherwise I'd wait to buy at the gate as we also got another free day that way.
Universal online offer of 7 days for the price of 2 is a good one or you can also get a 15 month for the price of 12 AP just now. Really depends how many visits you will make. Remember Universal is 2 parks and we haven't been able to do both justice in 1 day.

When you first get there check out the Dolphins. You can get really close to them and feed them. Great for people who cant stretch to doing the Discovery Cove trip. The felt like they were made of plastic though. I couldn't quite believe they were real !:wink

Sit up close at Shamu stadium for Shamu's refreshing effect on you during show.
