OMG my best friend has just rung me and has told me that some of my friends have clubbed together to take me to New York!!! Some of you might know it's been tough recently with my fiance being seriously ill, so the girls decided I need a fun weekend away. I'm only going 3 nights (we go on the 28th Jan) and as none of us have ever been before is there anything that anyone would recommend we definitely don't miss?

DD1's best mate just came back yesterday - apparently all she can talk about is the show "Chicago" - both she and her Grandad, who took her, said it was amazing:D

Have a wonderful time - nice friends you have, and they are right, you deserve a break:D

Love Suexx

Oh Clare, what a fantastic thing for them to do for you:jump: :jump:

If you can, a friend raves about the Big Apple Greeters (http://www.bigapplegreeter.org/) She said it made their trip even better.

Oh Clare what lovely friends you have. Don't miss going to the top of the Empire State Building great views by day and night also Macy's it is so huge. A trip to Central park to see the ice rink is lovely in winter and if you can brave the cold a 1 1/2 hour cruise may be a good chance to see the Island of Manhatten from a distnace and get a bit closer to the Statue of Liberty. Oh and a trip to Grand Central Station to see the station and huge food court, there is a gorgeous restaurant there called the Oyster Bar :)
What ever you do you will have a fab time.

yep, there is something I would recommend you dont miss

Taking me with you!!!!!!!!!!
I have been before and so am very well qualified to be your personal tour guide. All I ask is my return ticket (first class) and to stay in a 5* hotel. I will also need some spending money - $1000 should cover it.........
Things to not miss-
Ellens Stardust Diner
Carnegie Deli (onion rings and cheesecake)
Katz Deli
Empire State Building
Helicopter tour
China Town
Central Park
Tiffanys
Normas for breakfast at Le Parker Meridien hotel (pricey but very nice)
Starbucks - yes I know you can get it in the UK but its not the same atmosphere!
Rockerfella Centre
Macys - get your visitor discount card
There will be others who have done different bits, but whatever you do it will be fab. Its a great place and I am saving like mad to go back.

Clare - what a lovely treat, you've got some great friends.

We went to NY years ago , but I'd take a carriage ride round central park, take in a Broadway Show and visit Macys for a little shopping

Have fun!

If you want a musical that you can't get in the UK go see Wicked. It is truely amazing, I was lucky enough to get the last ticket for one show. Well worth the $195 I spent. Book tickets online.

Do the Empire State Building at Night, the view is stunning.

Walk every where. Everthing is truely in walking distant (apart from the wall street etc).

Brooklyn Diner - East 57th Street, Strawberry blonde cheesecake - eat it an you've tasted heaven! (That's about the 5th time I've recommended it here, I should be on commission!) We'll go back to NY JUST for it!

I will echo the post on Wicked. This might be the best live show you will ever see..... Get tickets if you can, no matter the price.

With only three days, and it being your first time, these are sites I would recomend.........

Rockefeller Center
Times Square
"Fifth Ave" from the 40's up to central park (you can walk it.)
Central Park
Empire State Building
Grand Central Station (go during a weekday during rush-hour for some good people watching)
The above are all in mid-town and walking distance from each other.
Visit Greenwich Village Soho on one day

See a museum, the Met, MoMA, Gugenheim any one of those is great.

For lunch and/or dinner, Mesa Grill, Craft, Bolo, Babbo, there are so many to choose from. have a hot dog from a street vendor!

For nightlife on saturday night, get a cab to the Soho Grande or Tribeca Grande for drinks...
www (dot) sohogrand (dot) com

If you get a chance, go 'downtown' to Ground Zero.

Do some resarch with this site:
newyork (dot) citysearch (dot) com

Subway is a great way to get around in NY, but there are also many yellow cabs. You can hail cabs from just about anywhere, and many times the fare is relatively cheap. They are more convenient than the subway........

Thank you all for your suggestions - I'm certainly going to be kept very busy. I'm under strict instructions from the girls that I'm not to organise anything and to leave it all to them so I've forwarded all your suggestions to them and I'll just have to wait until I get there and be surprised. :D

Have a great time, it is a fantastic place and we would go back tomorrow, if money would allow. Try to get booked in with a big apple greeter as someone else has suggested, we did and he was great took us to places we wouldn't have found on our own. Have a wonderful time.
