Look at Siesta Keys, Arnie and Jerry Springer live there. It is lovely and there are some reasonable hotels but try to avoid arriving at the weekend as it gets busy. We stayed in a Best Western when we visited Sarasotta, nowt special but clean and ideally situated.

the wellesley inn at sarasota is family orientated.it also has a complimetary extended continental breakfast. it is not far from the marina with its park and play area, also the starting point for the free trolly services. it is usually available at a good rate on priceline.

Siesta Key has few hotels - the Best Western is very central (actually inthe Village area and 100 yards from the beach -see my recent trippie for pics) but basic. There are many more apartments and houses for rent in the area than hotel rooms.

Stayed at 2 hotels on Sarasota beach - Holiday Inn Lido Beach , and the Raddison. Both were excellent, for families too, although probably prefer the Holiday Inn. Holiday Inn had a good pool and Gym.

Anna Maria Island is quite near Sarasota and is beautiful.
There are many accomodations 'on' the beaches. Do a search for the Chamber of Commerce for Anna Maria, they have many links for places to stay. There are a few small motels and lots of apartments and homes to rent. PM me if you need any more info.
