We stayed in the Westin which is in Times Square. Not sure how much it cost but it was a lovely and well located hotel.

We stayed at the Hilton Towers, right next to the Rockefeller Centre, very well located and very nice. Got a deal as part of a tailor made package including Orlando so do not know the price - good hotel though.
Definitely go for midtown location though!

We stayed in a fabulous hotel with the best views ever, we were on the 50th floor. It was Milenium Hilton and although situated just next to ground zero in the financial district it was really easy to get a tube every day and just hop on and off. Only took about 15 mins and it was quite nice at the end of the day to come back to somewhere quiet and away from the hustle & bustle of Midtown.
Would def stay there again when we visit next time, for the view alone it is worth it and they have very reasonable rates.

Hi Tiamaria,
we visited New York twice ( 1999 and 2002 ) and both times we stayed in Hotel NewYorker. It's a great hotel, near to Madison Square Garden and Empire State building ( and not expensive )
Very central in Manhattan

We're staying at Hilton Times Square which was recommended by a (US based) Amex travel consultant. It's also 5th out of 321 hotels at http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g60763-New_York_City_New_York-Hotels.html
I booked it myself at Hilton's own website for $249/nt inc breakfast (+ tax).
You've probably realised that hotels in NY are *much* more expensive than Florida (unless you're staying at a high end hotel)!

I stayed in the Salisbury Hotel, located on W57th Street. Nice hotel, clean and comfortable and the rooms were pretty big too. Booked via Octopus travel and paid around £200 for 3 nights in March 04 (though this was a discounted travel industry rate)

We also stayed in the Millennium Hilton between last Christmas and New Year. No problems at all and it is right next to several metro stations so getting around is easy.
As Bobbins suggests a good place to look would be Trip Advisor.
Wherever you stay I'm sure you'll have great time!
I stayed in the Grand Hyatt, right next door to Grand Central Station with the Chrysler Centre on the other site.
It was an ideal location, walking distance to Times Square, 5th Avenue, Empire State Building etc.
We got a really good deal thought Bon Voyage. Stayed for 4 nights flying American Airlines from Heathrow and it was £500 each.
HTH :)
