If you are travelling from within the EU
People travelling from within the EU to the UK can bring back tobacco and alcohol goods for their own personal use. If you bring back large quantities, Customs officers may ask you about the purposes for which you hold the goods. This particularly applies if you have with you more than the following amounts:
TOBACCO: 3,200 Cigarettes, 200 cigars, 3 kg of smoking tobacco
WINE: 90 litres of wine, 20 litres of fortified wine (such as port or sherry).
SPIRITS 10 litres of spirits,
BEER 110 litres of beer
'Own use' includes goods for your own consumption and gifts. If you bring in goods for resale, or for any payment, even payment in kind, they are regarded as being for a commercial purpose. The goods will be taken off you and for serious offences you could get up to up to seven years imprisonment. Note: there are some restrictions to countries new to the EU in 2004.

Thanks jj  although I bet you have it when I'm in Orlando :D
Just to add a little warning or two:
1. The Canary Islands, Tenerife, Lanzagrotty, etc. are NOT in the EU and it's the usual 200 cigs, etc rules.
2. Mainland Spain and the Balearics have their own version of the rules. You can only take 800 ciggies per person out of Spain. Before you all start shouting please remember, "Don't shoot the messenger." Yes I know that we're all in Europe. Yes I know that you can take 3,000 back into he UK but the Spanish (bless 'em) are of the opinion that if you are taking out more than 800 you are into the export business. It gets worse. Even for the 800 you are supposed to carry with you documentary evidence of your purchase, i.e. your till receipt. If you want to take out more than 800 you also need an export licence. Daft I know but them's the rules. You can read more on the UK Gov website by clicking here (http://www.ukinspain.com/english/consularServices/becareful.asp?IdNavSections=21&lang=en) then clicking on "Purchases of Tobacco products and Alcoholic drinks for export" in the centre of the page under "Be Careful". All the info is there finishing with this "Happy holiday" message:
"If travellers are apprehended with more than 800 cigarettes, but without the necessary accompanying documentation, the Spanish authorities are liable to seize the excess cigarettes or impose a large fine."
I know that some people have been caught out by this. Please don't be the next.
